Rotary Encoder Button Requiring Exceptional Force
The rotary encoder button on my MK3 (May 2018) has started requiring exceptional force to register a button press. I've tried upgrading firmware, and also removing the printed button and pressing it without the button. In both cases, I can hear the regular click sound using a reasonable amount of force, but cannot get the printer to register a button press without using significantly more force.
Sadly, I think the LCD module needs to be replaced and Prusa declined to cover it under warranty given that my warranty expired a month and a half ago (fair, I guess - but what a poor quality part!). I looked on Prusa's shop and was very surprised to it listed for $54, even before $12 shipping. It looks like a generic RepRapDiscount smart display that sells online for $10. If the part lasted forever, I would understand justifying the price by quality control, etc - but that wasn't the experience with the initial part, so I really can't see paying so much for the replacement...
Can anyone confirm if a RepRapDiscount Smart Controller is compatible with an MK3? I'm all for supporting Prusa, but five times the price for a replacement part seems a bit over the top...
Thanks in advance!
RE: Rotary Encoder Button Requiring Exceptional Force
Changing the firmware won't do anything, the encoder switch is kaput. You could source one and replace that component, not overly difficult to do. But if you don't have the desoldering/soldering equipment it is a moot point.
Here is where you might learn from my mistake. I recently broke the heater wire on mine. No problem, I thought I could save a few bucks by buying a new E3D V6 on Amazon. Big mistake as it didn't work as expected. $100 more for an Prusa replacement. My wife admonished me asking why didn't I buy a factory replacement. If you read the various threads Prusa does sometimes get customized parts from the name brand manufacturer.
Food for thought in your replacement decision. Good luck.
RE: Rotary Encoder Button Requiring Exceptional Force
prusa uses a 40W heater vs the default e3d 30W heater ( and slice eng uses a 50W heater on the mosquito hot end)

Brilliant! That answers a burning question I had about why it didn't work. And also reinforces my recommendation to buy factory parts.
Thank you David!
