Rattling sound only for movements in certain XY orientation
Hi there!
I recently bought the MK3S+ kit and assembled it last month. It's been working great so far and I'm really amazed at the quality of the prints. I did however encounter some weird rattling noises and haven't been able to figure out the source so far.
Funnily this noise is only audible during front-left to back-right XY movements:
and not during front-right to back-left ones:
I'd greatly appreciate any pointer as to what might be able to cause something like this!

Update on this topic:
I added an anti-vibration mat for the printer to stand on. I've put it on the floor to eliminate vibrations of the table. And I still have no clue what causes this. But after running a few larger prints with longer perimeters, I discovered that diagonal XY movements are in general much, much louder than single axis X or Y movements. And printing long stretches of diagonal perimeters is again much louder than, for example, printing the faster diagonal bottom layer stretches.

I have the same noise when printing diagonal lines but not when printing 90 degrees.
Support said that's normal but it sounds odd.
Did you find a solution?

It's your infill density most likely. Compare printing 3D octagon at 70% to 3d octagon at 10%. The higher density infills -sound- like something is rattling. It's normal - your head is shaking back and forth and rubbing across some tightly packed hard plastic is my thinking.

The truth is stepper motors are making fast steps between magnetic stops. This mechanical start-stop induces vibrations that resonate out of the motor to adjacent metal, and these surfaces interact with air and make the sound you hear. Two motors working in tandem (a diagonal move) are louder than a single motor (X or Y moves).
There are also surfaces that rattle. Early on it was things like the power supply components and the LCD touching the plastic case. When driven by motor movements, the noises made were quite dramatic. You can enable STEALTH mode to quiet the printer down, or choose a different speed (up or down from 100%). In the end, stepper motors make noise - and an enclosure can help if stealth or other factors to change the drive speeds doesn't offer enough noise reduction.

I have the sound also in first layer. There is no infill. Just straight diagonal lines.

It's a speed thing. Straight moves use one motor axis, and the mass of the system averages the mechanical steps out: things run smoothly. When X and Y are moving, the mass chatters as it moves first X then Y then some other direction. Unavoidable noise. Run in STEALTH mode to quiet it down.

it's perfectly normal, in fact while your printer is new you should take the time to learn its sounds, so that as it ages and you develop a good relationship with it you will know when its not doing well.
Not kidding, I've had prints that sounded like my printer was playing music.
Generally if your printer is having a real problem it will manifest itself in the print quality first, then in some physical form, examples,, bad bearings, scratched rods, broken or burnt wires. IME these things become evident fairly quickly with regular inspection and general maintenance as well and the compliment of safety features built in.

First I thought it might be a problem with the y stepper or the controller board. Because my other printer (Anycubic) does not do this sounds. But it seems it's really normal and i have to get used to it. Although it's a really strange sound.
But print quality is excellent compared to my other printer and I am very lucky about that. So I don't want to miss it anymore.

Put it in an enclosure and it will lessen the noise.

This week I have disassembled all axis. I have cleaned all bearings with Isopropanol alcohol. Then I have lubed them with super lube as recommended by prusa. And assembled the printer again. Now the noise is gone. Don't know why. Maybe it was the lube I used (LM47). Maybe it was a bad bearing, which is now on z axis and I cannot hear it anymore.
