The filesystem used on SD cards is not Prusa's creation so it's a bit unreasonable to blame them when a multi-billion corporation is the one that decided the naming conventions. Blame Bill Gates, not Jo Prusa. You can read about MS-DOS/Windows naming conventions here. Basically, characters following a period are an extension that was originally used to identify the file type. You are creating a file that has no filename part and only an extension. The history is long and convoluted. You can avoid the problem by using "0.25"  or similar.

FYI - Filenames beginning with a dot are hidden files on MacOS and Linux operating systems, so also not legitimate names for user files on those operating systems.

I can save and reopen in Excel a file such as .25name. So I'm not sure your answer is valid.

Oh Bobs answer is valid.  It doesnt really matter if windows, linux, mac os or whatever can or can not handle the file name, what matters is if the 8bit board with very limited firmware that is in the MK3 can handle it.  It cant.

Really how much trouble is it to use a naming convention that will work when the problem is pointed out.  Instaed of using .25Name, use n25Name instead to signify nozzle diameter.

Yes, the solution on my end is fairly simple.

Is this really an issue? Seriously? Following this logic, we need a 64bit controller and multi-gigabit controller on every printer in case somebody decides to name their file with the turd emoji. Because coming up with other meaningful filenames is hard.
