Prusa I3 MK3 suddenly stops calibrating z axis

Hi there,

I have a Prusa I3 MK3 assembled by me that I succesfully used for over a month, with excellent results.

Today I received a new filament, so I launched a test print (a benchy). Print was successful, but I wanted to adjust some parameters for the new material, so I just sliced it again with new parameters and launched the print (5 minutes after the last successful one) and..

Printer didn't calibrate. The Z axis started to move up, than it didn't go down to calibrate with PINDA probe, stating "Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again".

I updated the firmware and launched calibration wizard: everything ok, except when it have to calibrate z axis the z axis won't go down, giving me the same error.

I tried the previous slice (the one that was successful a few minutes earlier), and same results of calibration failure.

I checked the cables to see if somehow something moved, but everything, including PINDA probe, was correctly connected.

Z axis movements also are ok.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks for your answer! =)

What do You mean, exactly by tripping?

The pinda probe is perfectly clean and there's nothing between the heatbed and the probe. Also, the z axis movements are ok in both directions...

Do you see the light on the pinda turn on?

Something strange is happening.

I turned the printer on to check what You said: the PINDA led turned on too. When the printer was "ready", then the PINDA light turned off (I think this is normal). I tryied to put something metallic on the probe and the light didn't turn on. I lunched the "Show pinda state" from the printer, and the state was Z1 (led off) both with and without a metallic object touching the probe.

Now, here comes the strange things: I tryied to turn the printer off and the PINDA lights, this time, didn't turn on.

Here comese the strangest: I launched a XYZ calibration. When the Z axis went up (just before the printer asks if there is the metal sheet on the heatbed), only the right Z motor worked, inclinating the z axis. Then, I received the same error (Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again).

So I moved the z axis up and.. this time both motors worked, in both directions!

I'm confused...

maybe it was off too much, so its working now? and does the light light up when it gets close to the bed?

It's not working and the light is not turning on even by getting as closer as possible to the heatbed.. 🙁

Ouch, maybe a bad pinda? Maybe the support chat in the Eshop has fast tests for you to try, they are fast at helping.

PINDA LED should always be ON unless it senses metal close to it. If your PINDA is off when it is not in close proximity to metal then either the PINDA itself is faulty or its wire has a break in it.

I contacted the eshop.

We arrived to the conclusion that the PINDA probe is defective. They was very kind and sent me a new one for free!

Thank you all for the support. Happy prints!

Alberto.
