Printing directly on steel sheet without pei - possible?

Hi guys,
I have been happy printing for some time now.
However the only thing that caused issues is printing abs without warping/lifting from the print bed. I print in an enclosure.
So far using abs juice really did the trick. No more warping and prints stick like crazy.
However on my last print it sticked so well i literally tore off the pei sheet!
So now reading about replacing the pei sheet, but cant help to wonder if it is not possible to print directly on the steel sheet without the pei! and use some abs juice to stick.
I could then use the other side with pei for pla prints..
If this is a really stupid idea please tell me.. 😉
Thanks!

In theory yes, but the biggest problem is getting the torn PEI off. I've got a side with a smaller bit missing and while I have a replacement PEI sticker, I don't relish losing an afternoon fighting with it.

If you do manage to remove the torn sticker cleanly, there are a bunch of alternative print surfaces you can try, from PEI to BuildTak to GeckoTek to the various Chinese knock-offs.

those look a bit like rust spots if they are Prusa might Warrantee the sheet. try the chat link and show them this picture via the link in their chat system. if you had rust starting under the sheet that might have contributed to the failure

For ABS try Printbite+ at 110ºC. Sticks like hell - I've printed a Warpinator 5000 with no brim or other assists - and then just pops free at about 75ºC.

Thank you so much for your answers!
It took me about two hours and a lot of elbow grease to get the sticker glue off. What a mess. 😅 I will for sure try the 3dlac spray.
