Printer turns off when heatbed/ nozzle are activated

Hi all,  i recently had a PSU go out after many years of use, so i got a replacement PSU,

I installed the new PSU, and now the printer turns off (restarts) when i activate preheat.

Note: i think my PSU died because the power stopped working and the fuse that blew  in the old psu was swapped for a new one with no change

Thanks,

It sounds like you may have a loose or shorted heater or thermistor wire.

You should be able to isolate the issue to the hot end or the bed heater by selecting each of them independently in the LCD menus instead of choosing a preheat setting, which will turn both heaters on simultaneously.

I would try each circuit with the thermistor plugged in at the Einsy board and then unplugged.

Once you isolate the faulty heater circuit you can trace out the wires and ring out the connections to find the issue. Be sure to disconnect the line side power before checking for shorts or continuity.

Good luck.

Just a word of caution: Be extremely careful turning on circuits containing potentially damaged wiring. Have your printer’s mains plugged into a circuit breaker protected power strip and be ready to flip the switch off if anything seems amiss.

Dont touch any metal parts of the printer or power supply while testing on a live circuit.

Having a small fire extinguisher or a fire blanket at hand is always recommended when working with any live electrical circuits, particularly if a short is suspected.

And please consult a person knowledgeable in electrical circuits if you have any doubts about your ability to troubleshoot this safely.

  1. You're brilliant!  That was exactly the problem for me.  Instead of using preheat I preheated the bed, nothing, then I preheated the hot end, turned off.  Find closer inspection It was a short right at the thermistor. Kudos! 👏
