printer pause and writes "heating" & extruder engine gets very hot & stop extruding

Hi,
My printer was doing well, but now I have two problems that are probably related:

1) during the print, after a while, the printer pause and display "heating" on the LCD. while it doing so, It seems that the temperature is normal (215/215 and 60/60).

2) During the print, the extruder engine becomes very hot. I did open the extruder screws and close them as shown in (it didn't help):

3) after 2 hours or so, filament stop coming out.
Using 0.4 drills I checked to see if there is no blockage in the nozzle.

Thanks in advance

What slicer are you using? I seem to get more of those messages with Cura than PrusaSlicer though I'm not sure why.

As to the jams: are you printing in an enclosure or a room with high ambient temps? Heat can cause a variety of issues with PLA if the air cooled E3D V6 hotend cannot cool efficiently.

Hi,
I used files that were slicer in prusaSliser and worked before. For the room temperature - I printed with this printer in the same room, and all wend well.  Do anyone knows why the printer stops and write "Heating..." ?

The Heating... display is sort of a default text that can be displayed when many different things are happening.  It really isn't a great help.

  • Disable the filament sensor (I know, tangent to the problem, but just to eliminate a known issue).
  • Run a PID calibration (also helps to eliminate stale EEPROM data).
  • At the next jam, UNLOAD the filament and observe the melt end: if it has a mushroom stub, measure the stub diameter: if it is 2.2 mm post a photo.  This is also a common problem. There are a couple solutions, one temporary, one a bit more reliable and permanent.

Hi, Thank you for your answer.
I did what Tim wrote, and the jam repeated. Indeed the filament end is around 2.2mm. adding a picture. I looked carefully at the filament and it looked like the extruder did try to push the filament.
How do I continue from here?

If that is in fact 2.2 mm, the cause is "likely" retractions pumping melt up the heat break into the expanded custom Prusa 2.2 mm bore, where it cools and after several of these repeated pumping actions the 2.2mm section is large enough it will not push into the 2.0 mm section of the heat break.

A cure is to replace the heat break with a stock E3D-V6 version.

This is what the inside of the Prusa version looks like: the issue is that step just at the neck.  It's to help MMU's operate with less than ideal filament tips.  But if you aren't using an MMU, the step is a problem waiting to happen.

Here's the stock E3D-V6 heat break, for comparison:
