RE: Power Supply failure

Three years is not bad for a power supply.  I had two fail and I replaced them with:

  1. Meanwell NES 350-24
  2. Meanwell LRS 350-24

Both will work.  I prefer the LRS because I was able to find more printable parts for it at the time.

Possibly stupid question here.  Is the Meanwell LRS 350-24 a drop-in (or close to a drop-in) replacement for the stock power supply in the Mk3s?  It was quite reasonable at the link you gave above, and if it's a no-hassle replacement, I might just order one to have on hand in my 'crash kit' of 3d printer items.

Thanks.

@jsw

Yes and no.  Both require different 3d printed parts.  Both will work once you print the parts.

Thanks.

It looks like this requires the switch and the power connector on the side.  However, it looks like it's straightforward and I may just do it so I'm not beholden to a shipment from 1/3 of the way around the world if/when the power supply fails.

1. I'd be interested to know if anyone has been successful in repairing their power supply, I have other printers that I'd like to upgrade from MK2 to MK3 (12v to 24v) and I expect that it would be nice to have an extra on hand... and won't throw away perfectly good electronics if I can help it. Any help? A schematic? What went wrong with yours?

If your PSU is failing with sparks and smoke then a repair requires some electrical engineering knowledge and special tools. Because it's high voltage device, it should be done by trained personal. It's not worth it to risk your live to save some money.

The links you have here are all dead, even though they are only from 2020. Do you know where to get the schematics of the Power Panic module?

@robert-rmm200

The main power panic circuit is on a PCB soldered to the back of the AC plug. The only connection between the power panic PCB and the power supply is a single wire it uses to get 24V from the power supply. So it was an easy transition.

MK3_PSU

Prusa MK3 PSU

Here an example of how to do it:

Here a somewhat older post from 2018: Power Panic
