Mk3s selector button starting to "not work" on occasion

Many times I press the selector button and it does not "select" what I am trying to select.

At first it infrequently failed but is getting worse and now takes multiple pushes to gain success.

What is the fix for this?

Is this a common/known issue?

Thanks!!

RE: Mk3s selector button starting to "not work" on occasion

My problem was that I needed to start to press really hard to generate a button press.

Today I disassembled the screen housing with the intention of figuring out the part number.

The rotary encoder shaft could not go in all the way for the button to engage because there was lint and stuff wrapped around it. Once I cleaned it the button responds much nicer. I think this fixed it.

I've added a 8mm long slice of shrink-wrap tubing to act as a skirt. I've carefully heated it only on the shaft side with a soldering iron so it hugs it tightly.

I had this issue. I found that the cause was that the printer was resting on the LCD display case. One rubber foot had slid when I moved the whole printer to a new location. My fix was to slide the rubber foot back into place so that the printer was resting on the four rubber feet again and not on the LCD case. In my troubleshooting, I also took apart the LCD assembly per the printer assembly instructions, but I'm not sure whether that is required to fix the problem. I also think it takes some time (5 minutes) for the problem to resolve after getting the printer back on its four rubber feet. Not sure whether power cycling helped too.

There's more: I found that the pushbutton was not working and that the encoder rotation was working intermittently. It turns out my ribbon cable connector had come loose at the Einsy Rambo board. Plugging that connector back in solved the problem. Perhaps the cable came loose during the move of my printer.

Also, for future reference, a continuity test can be performed on the encoder buttons to labeled pins of the connectors to the ribbon cables on the LCD breakout board. This test let me know that there was nothing wrong with my encoder or my LCD board so I started searching for a problem with the ribbon cable.

Had this similar issue on two MK3s.

First one was a custom 3D printed selection knob. After a few months of use the shaft gradually slipped deeper in the knob to the point that the knob skirt would rest against the panel surface before actuating the switch. A simple back plug to shim the shaft solved the issue.

Second was with original knob. I could feel and hear the detent properly. Resoldering the pcb encoder/switch contacts solved it. Same board had issues with intermittent display the previous year that also was a bad solder joint, at the ribbon plug. So I redid all the solder joints on the whole board while being there. No issues in the past 6 months....
