MK3 Y-Carriage noise

Hi there,

I've had my MK3 from kit form for about two months now and have been having some noise with the Y-Carriage since day one of building it. At first I thought it was just some alignment issues that would sort itself out as time passed but the noise has gotten a little progressively worse.

On fast movements on the Y-axis there's quid a loud grinding sound from what I think is the bearings (as this sound was present when building the kit before the belt and motor was even attached). I've double and triple checked the alignment of the Y-axis rods, loosened and tightened the holders for the rods to see if it was an alignment issue there. I've also checked the alignment of the bearings as well as loosening up and re-tightening the U bolts but that hasn't seemed to help either.

I actually spent a bit of time wondering if I should have asked about this issue sooner as it was present during assembly but after reading a few posts some noise was normal at that stage of the assembly.

This only happens on fast Y-axis movements. There is still noise during the slower movements but it isn't as noticeable. I tried to grab a video to demonstrate the noise:

I also tried greasing the rods slightly to see if it was a friction issue with the bearings but that didn't help much either. I did also double check that the belt was not rubbing against the pulley but the noise does seem to be mostly coming from the left hand side with the double bearings.

Re: MK3 Y-Carriage noise

Yeah, mine are noisy too. Responses to my post where that it was "Normal", which I'm not a fan of since this is supposed to be a "Quite" printer... 🙄

The Mk3 is not actually a quiet printer... but it is very quiet in comparison to the Mk2/S, which sounded more like a bench grinder at times.

Re: MK3 Y-Carriage noise (Squeak)

I fixed it by replacing the screw holding the y-pulley with an almost threadless one, i had terrible sqeaking before and noticed that the screw
was pretty worn down.
Quite surprising that there are not more reports of that. Even after oiling the pulley (on the stock screw) the sqeaking came back very soon.
The support said the threads should not make much of a difference but at least in my case it was HUGE.
I looked for the problem under the keyword "squeak" so if you think that's the right word for the noise you could perhaps add that in the subject
so it is easier found.
