Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Anyone else having their house lights flicker with the psu clicking and led? Are the printers drawing to much power?

I'm experiencing the same thing, appears to be when the bed is heating up.

I too am getting a faint clicking from the PSU on a two week old kit. I have not noticed any flickering lights from it though.

Glad it's not just me! When printer is printing, lamps in different parts of the house flicker at a pretty high frequency. I should probably put a watt meter on it and see if it's doing anything obvious.

Just assembled my MK3 kit, getting the same PSU clicking during bed/nozzle warm up, USA.

RE:

I was just told by customer support via chat that "the clicking is normal because of automatic switching". He wasn't very enthusiastic about providing any more details. I have three other printers and non of them click, very weird that this one does. Is it just low quality? Does anyone elses get's hot?

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

I'm getting it as well.

I find it frustrating that Prusa has not publicly commented on this nor has any of the youtube makers who have done "reviews".

I probably would have gone with another printer if I knew this was so obnoxious. 😡 😡

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Same issue with mine, but it was Not clicking when I first assembled it.

I completed my assembly and initial calibration 2 weeks ago and have had only minimal time to play with the printer. I spent a lot of time calibrating yesterday, got it 95% dialed in. Today I have printed a lot. I completed a 3 hour print, started up another print and noticed the clicking. It doesn't bother me, I'm just more concerned that it may be a safety issue.

Maybe Prusa will provide some info as to if the relay in the heater circuit is mechanical or solid state. If mechanical, that would ease my worrying.

Yes, I have the same issues. Loud clicking in sync with the light on the build plate, and then house lights in the room all flicker with the clicking. Very annoying, the clicking noise is one thing, but to also have to deal with the flickering lights, it gets old quick.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

I just built and assembled my new MK3. same thing.. 1 day in..... loud obnoxious clicking... very annoying.

I've e-mailed Prusa, and they have not responded to that question.

I'm kind of upset that they still haven't responded to this issue... 9 pages in? Seriously?

Maybe we all need to take video of the clicking, and post them on youtube. I definitely would not have paid this much for a Prusa if I knew it was going to annoy me all day like Chinese water Torture... 🙁

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Yea, just got done building mine and it works like a charm, except that there is this extremely annoying clicking noise when the bed is being heated. Just a CONSTANT clicking noise, about 3-5 clicks a second, then silence for a second, then another 2 clicks, then silence for a second, then 10 clicks over 2-3 seconds, then silence, then more and more and more and more and more....
*ugh*
This....this is super not cool.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Chiming in to note that the i3 Mk3 I just received (non-kit) has this same clicking. It appears to be the on/off phases of the heated bed, so while i'ts heated (on) there is no noise, and when it reaches temp, it regulates by switching on/off, which results in the audible click.

This seems like a hardware fix, to me, but if they can solve it in firmware, I'd be pretty happy.

Yeah my opinion on PR is quickly turning. I've been a bit iffy since the Thomas Sanladerer video two months back when they brushed off the whole inconsistent extrusion thing and Prusa himself acted kind of uninterested and rude. Do they not believe this is an issue? Any input? Hello? My power supply still clicks, and makes my house lights flicker...

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

I just assembled my Mk3 today and I am noticing this issue as well.
I would throw my hat in with other similar observations that it is likely the heated bed reaching temperature, which causes the board to switch power to the bed on and off rapidly to hit its setpoint. I would hope they could do something with firmware.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

My MK3 (kit) has been producing good printed results for a day. However, the power supply noise, and the flickering room lights, are pretty intolerable.

See here (26 second video):

In the video I start out standing by the printer, and walk out of the room, finally reaching ~20 feet (6 meters). Although the camera audio can't pick it up, I can still hear the clicking noise from some of the other nearby rooms in the house. Based on the MK3 videos I've seen from other people--so far--I believe the noise from my power supply is considerably worse than most.

Some time after I recorded that video, I began to notice that the bed heat PWM duty cycle (as implied by the flickering bed LED) seems to slowly ramp up from 0% to maybe 80%, hold for a few seconds, and then slowly ramp back down to 0, where it holds for a few seconds before repeating. I don't have an objective measurement, but it sounds like the PSU noise only occurs when the PWM duty cycle is above ~50%. Note that, in the video I posted above, there is no pause in the noise.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

I'm happy to report that, after seeing the video I posted, the tech on "live chat" said they'd ship me a new PSU right away.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

FWIW: My Mk3 made some rather noticeable clicking in time with the LED on the bed flashing. Over time (2-3 months) it quieted down and is now nearly silent. Definitely worth checking with support, but if they say it's normal, give it some time before losing hope. I also noticed that my part cooling fan was pretty obnoxious at less than 100% speed when PWM kicked in. Same result there. It's much quieter now.

Hello? My power supply still clicks, and makes my house lights flicker...

If it makes your house lights flicker you have another, more serious, problem and it is with your house electrical system. Odds are your lights are wired into the same breaker as your outlets and you are causing a serious voltage droop - to the level that the lights cannot remain powered (voltage too low).

I would get that looked at and have the outlets electrically separated from the lights.

Of course, you could also always just have a very old electrical system or a seriously under-powered one.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

To add to this conversation, I can say that my Mk2.5 (upgraded from Mk2s) is also having the clicking problem. It wasn't having the problem before the upgrade, and then it only appears to have started recently. A few prints were successful without the clicking. The clicking is in sync with the heatbed LED (while heating up and once at target temp), and tends to stop once the print actually starts. I am using latest firmware.

Anyone successful in getting this resolved?

Rob
