Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

I am also having this issue. Reported to [email protected].

Has anyone already received their replacement power supply? How long did it take?

Am I running any risk by using the power supply anyway? Common sense says don't use it, but if someone could convince me it's ok, I do really want to print things. 😉

I don't think there is any risk in continuing to use the power supply.

My replacement looks to be scheduled to arrive today, so a little over a week since I sent the original email with the video.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Received my replacement power supply today, but one of the 3D printer parts in the assembly was damaged in shipping. Decided this was a good opportunity to tear down the power supply and collect some details on the power supply/power panic board, since I needed to swap my existing parts over.

Just keep in mind you shouldn't do this if you don't know what you are doing. You'll set your dog on fire/burn your house down/electrocute yourself.

The thing I'm most surprised about here is that only a 240W power supply was speced. I would have expected closer to 350W. Part of this might just be that the heated bed can be designed to draw less power when you don't have a huge piece of aluminum attached to it acting as a heatsink.

I have the clicking issue in the Rambo case also. Sounds like a small electrical arcing.....

Received my replacement power supply today, but one ...

By god man! Does the new one still click?

Thanks for the photos though; that is an interesting board. Can't help but wonder why if they bothered to spin a custom board they didn't do a soft power circuit and give the machine the ability to power down in an emergency situation (stuck mosfet etc)

Did the new one resolve the clicking noise? Were you able to find out what was causing the sound on the old PSU?

Thanks

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

I got my new PSU installed last night.. I originally had both the irritating “Rattle” during prints; as well as the less annoying “clicking” during power cycle of the heated bed.

The new PSU eliminated the Rattle portion; but the heated bed “clicking” is still there. Possibly reduced; or possibly I just care less lol.. I am on 120v.

No dice. I swapped the power supply this evening and it's exactly the same as the first if not worse.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Support told me they are releasing a fw update to address the issue. No ETA.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Mine is doing a soft clicking as well. It starts out noticeable when it's heating up, but then sort of fades in and out during a print.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

That will be quite a feat if Prusa can eliminate power supply 'clicking' with a firmware update.

Initially I thought the same - how to update the PSU when there's no data connection to it ? however, I think what the update will do is change the way power is turned on/off/pwm-ed in order to eliminate the clicking (softer ramp-up or something similar).

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Yes, I think a tweak to the PID/PWM algorithm (basically limiting the max di/dt for the heated bed and maybe for the nozzle) should do it. The issue will be to make sure that doesn't have a negative impact on the general temperature stability. Might not be an issue, but that kind of control loop algorithm is always tricky.

One interesting indicator that it is power draw related: I took my mk3 to my mother's house for the holidays (visiting with the family). Older electrical system. The lights in the house now flicker in time to the clicking! It's almost festive, a sound/light show.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Power supply clicking is usually a suspect inrush limiter AKA thermistor. I received a PSU with one and it did the same thing before its fiery failure. The thermistor actually blew apart and fell out of the PSU case.. sheesh...

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Is there any update to this issue? It is the loudest thing on the mk3. Still an amazingly quiet printer, but if this could get resolved, it would make a huge difference.

the latest I heard was that Prusa is aware of the noise and they're investigating. This came from a CSR that I spoke to in an online chat.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Support sent me a new power supply. Replacement still has the clicking. I haven't had a chance to reach back out to support.

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

hi, I also have the sounds from the PSU.
I solved the problem as follows:
1. I loosened the screws of the PSU (yellow arrow)
2. A 19mm thick Amaflex pad for the printer (green arrow)

Both reduce noise by about 85%

Re: MK3 Power Supply Clicking

Just received my new MK3 in the U.S. and also noticing the clicking noise (and room lights flashing in sync). 😮

Any updates on a resolution to this issue? I did update to the latest f/w as instructed. 3.1.1 b150 RC5
