Min temp issues

Well I have had my MK3 for about 2 weeks and must admit it is my first 3d printer and was preassembled. This morning when going to start a print, it would on calibration go nuts on number 7 (Third spot) and temps would go from 210 to 0 in a second and then finish and give me the error. I have tried the setup, calibrations etc with the same issue. How can I fix this?

Well as an update, the extruder is getting so hot it is melting the PLA and starting to smoke. So I have shut down the machine until I hear back from someone.

Sounds like a broken termistor or wire to this in the extruder. What temps does it show on hotend when the printer is idle?

Sorry for the noob question, but is it okay to plug back in to see? When it started melting, it was at 203 heating up to 210.

Re: Min temp issues

To be honest, I may not understand the issue completely. Melting the PLA is what the nozzle is supposed to do, right? And if there is smoke it may be that the material you want to print is wet (moisture from air). That generates a little smoke sometimes.

But if the displayed temperature drops suddenly, I would think that the wire to the thermistor is broken or the thermistor itself is broken.

I would switch the power on but NOT heat the printer. Then I would look at the temperature reading which should be nearly the same for the bed and the nozzle. Than I would move the X axis and the Z axis and also manually wiggle the cable bundle to the extruder. If the displayed temperature suddenly changes, the wire will be broken.

What I mean by hot is it was so hot that pla was basically pouring out like it was 300 degrees. I’ll try the other stuff here shortly.

So when I move the Extruder all the way to the right. Temp goes from 20 (same as bed) to zero

Re: Min temp issues

Hi Tom. Sounds like your thermistor wire is broken or the plug is loose
