MAXTEMP when printer is first powered on

I just replaced my hot end and in the process damaged my thermistor so I ordered a new one and installed it today. When the printer is powered on if the thermistor is plugged in and attach to the extruder it gives me a Max temp error and a loud screeching noise. If the thermistor is either detached from the circuit board or the extruder I get no error and a regular temperature reading. I tried different thermistors and have the most recent firmware 3.1.0. has anybody else seen this problem and how do you overcome it?

Re: MAXTEMP when printer is first powered on

sounds like there is a short circuit somewhere.

check for resistance between leads on thermistor, when not connected to einsy, should be in the region 100K ohms at 20centigrade if a lot less, then thermistor is suspect.
check for resistance between thermistor leads and case, should be infinite... if you can read resistance from wires to case, below 1Megohm, then thermistor is suspect
