Left Z-motor not functioning (Resolved)

I just finished building my MK3 and passed the self-test without issue, but the left Z-motor isn't working.

I'd noticed during assembly that it was always stiffer than the right, but didn't worry about it at the time.

I've tried switching the two cables around on the board incase that was the issue but the right motor works fine regardless.

Do I have a bad motor that needs to be replaced, or is there something else I can try?

Make sure the cover nut on the lead screw is not screwed down too tight on the motor.

I've checked the cover nut and it's definitely not too tight.

After playing around with it a little I've discovered that the motor works, but only when the right Z-motor isn't plugged in. And even then it seems very stiff. If I have both of them plugged in the left motor will only work if I help it along a little. I"m thinking maybe it needs a little more lubrication? Is there a specific product I should look for? Or one I should avoid?

I have the same problem - I asked for a replacement. Lets see what they come up with. Received the kit this week. Left Z Axis was turning not as easy as the right one. No operation dead on arrival. Lets see how many loops we can jump through until we have 100 times proofed it is a problem. 🙂

I did some more troubleshooting to try and isolate the problem and it turns out the issue isn't with the motor, it's with the Trapezoidal nut which isn't turning freely. There's too much friction between it and the rod which is stopping the whole thing from moving!

I talked to Prusa support through the chat and they agreed to send me a replacement part. But since I bought it through Voxel Factory here in Canada I had to contact them to get the replacement. All-in-all it's been relatively painless, just frustrating that I won't be printing this weekend.

Thanks Nicholas for letting me know so maybe I will check the part and see if it changes if I change the nut left to right. Good hint. Let us know how it goes once you get the new nut.

Binding Trapezoidal Nut

My MK3 just came and has this same issue, a binding Trapezoidal Nut effecting a Z motor (my left one too!). I actually got it to work by dremel drilling out the effected thread portion, as it was only the last 10% of the threads binding.

However, does anyone know if Prusa sells new ones on the web store? Link?

Also, are the brass ones on Amazon and stuff considered an upgrade, or is the stock Delrin ones the way to go?

Re: Left Z-motor not functioning (Resolved)

Hi Guys,
today I received the spare parts after requesting them on the weekend. So it only took two days from Prague to Stuttgart to get the parts. The support I received is phenomenal - no run around simply helpful and providing what I need to get going. I would recommend using the chat function or write and email to request the nut. I have not seen them on the shop here but now got a spare one. Replacing the nut took 10 minutes and now my MK3 works like a charm! Great support I am really surprised. Thanks 😀 🙂
