Is every firmwate update full of bugs for the old MK3 original?

I am kind of hating my MK3. I bought it years ago but just assembled it in kit form recently because originally when I ordered it it was back order for months so I bought a different printer at the time. Fast forward to today (although I put it together months ago) and every firmware I try has one bug or another. I got past the filament sensor error during calibration by upgrading to v3.12.2 but that leaves the hot end  very close to the print bed after a print so you can't pull the sheet up and off. So on the advice of another member here I downgraded to v3.11 and that gave me an error about the stepper pulley being loose, but it isn't. Then the POS crashed and won't get past the boot screen. So I took a chance and upgraded to the latest release and I get some calibration error and now it is stuck at the boot screen. I am going to go back to v3.12.2 but then I will have to raise the Z axis after every print. And when I originally got the filament sensor error after I built it, I contacted tech support and took pics etc and we determined it was likely a bad sensor. But Prusa doesn't even sell that sensor as a replacement part so they tell you to buy a complete upgrade kit and rebuild the printer! Anybody else go this kind of fun with your MK3?

Nope, no issues with my mk3, non S. then again I’m running 3.7.something. It worked perfectly then and still does. None of the additions were worth messing with a perfectly working printer setup in my opinion.

As for your issue of not raising far enough at the end of a print, that’s simple to alter in your slicer printer profile end gcode. You can make it raise however much you want afterwards by changing one line. There’s also the press and hold the control knob to access the z axis movement quickly which can also be used to move the extruder up manually.

I'm still running 3.10.0 on my MK3S+ so I wouldn't have to deal with these kinds of issues.

RE:

Ok, I can adjust the G-code but don't know why I should have to. I have the main issue with the filament sensor error so I can't get through the calibration wizard. Last time I updated the firmware I was able to disable the filament sensor and get past that. This time I just updated (downgraded) back to v 3.12.2 and I can't disable the filament sensor again. But I did get the first layer calibration done and I am printing again. Are you sure you don't have the MK3 S or MK3 S+ version as the latest firmware for my printer is only 3.13.1 I think. And those upgraded models have the upgraded filament sensor.

Thanks

version 3.13.2-rc1 is the latest available at https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/releases?page=1   its a release candidate so yeah its also possibly got new different issues.

You can download all the previous versions and read through all the release notes there rather than going to the main prusa website.  Just checked and I am running v3.7.0-rc1 so a very old version, that predates all the new stuff as well as the new sensors.  Why mess with something if it works great.

The last version regarded by many users as 'good' was 3.11.  Basically as that was before the introduction of the new thermal model which a lot of people have had trouble with.

As to "I can adjust the G-code but don't know why I should have to", well if you want it to behave differently to the standard then you have to customise it.  The raise height is controlled by the slicer at slice time and not the printer firmware, always has been.  Changing firmware is not going to change that.

Going backwards and forwards with firmware really needs a full factory reset in between versions, especially if downgrading.  Newer version could update the eeprom settings which are not always changed on a firmware update.  So installing a version, doing a factory reset first and then calibration is often required.

Ok, thanks for the added info. I am printing now so I can't do much till later or tomorrow. I did find the filament sensor that I bought from Aliexpress because Prusa quit selling them. I just installed one and now I can enable or disable it so I think I may be able to pass the calibration next time but I am afraid to randomly choose the best firmware as I hate to have to do 5-6 firmware updates to bet the one that works best.

On the G-code discussion Prusa did mess up the firmware as to where the hot end was positioned after a print sometimes crashing into the bed. It was reported and verified here:

Thanks for confirming that. I was starting to go crazy. But I ended up installing the filament sensor I bought from AliExpress so at least my hardware is back to good.
