Prusa i3 MK3S: Ripples and tearing in first layer

OK, Team Prusa - I need help.

I recently upgraded my MK3 to a MK3S using the Prusa upgrade kit. Since the upgrade, my print quality is generally good... above the first few layers. The bottom layers are a trainwreck.

The image above is six instances of a 100mm x 60mm x 0.5mm PLA slab, sliced using the Fast quality settings on Simplify3D. If I increase the thickness to 1mm or more, the layers above the bottom are smoother, and by 1mm the top surface is smooth; but the bottom surface is still deformed.

Things that I've tried:

  • Replacing the nozzle with a brand-new nozzle and then recalibrating the first layer.

  • Varying Z calibration between -1.1 and -1.35. (-1.1 produced even more severe tearing. -1.35 produced about the same ripple problem, but also surface scarring from the nozzle scraping along the print surface at the end.)

  • Varying bed temperature between 55C and 70C. (Lower temperatures produced more tearing; higher temperatures produced warping.)

  • Changing the print quality setting to Medium. (I tried this twice. The first attempt produced an extruder blob due to a complete adhesion failure. The second attempt produced not even a coherent surface - more like a set of individual lines.)

  • Cleaning the bed surface with acetone wipes. (No change.)

  • Moving the print to a completely different part of the bed, thinking that the center of the bed might be too hot. (No change.)

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Recommendations?

You never actually identify your bed type. Smooth or textured?

In either case put the acetone away somewhere out of reach. Forget where you put it.

Scrub the bed with an unscented detergent (line Dawn), lots of water, and dry with clean paper towels.

Never touch the print surface.

Skip the IPA for the first prints - and never use anything less than 91%.

This is all based on my thinking you have loss of first layer adhesion. Let us know how it goes.

@robert-rmm200

Now, that's some interesting advice. Thanks.

I've used 91% acetone wipes on the surface, and only on occasion (typically when (a) I'm having adhesion problems or (b) the surface looks like it has some print residue on it). It doesn't look damaged in any way, though that's not a good indicator.

I was skeptical that the surface was the problem because the same weird pattern - rippling and tearing in the middle - occurred when I moved the print off to the side. But, of course, I didn't just use acetone wipes in the middle but on the edges as well.

Easy solution: I was thinking of buying a powdered bed surface anyway, just for curiosity. I'll see if the problem magically vanishes with that option.

If you have problems with smooth plate adhesion - they will be worse with the textured...

Try to solve your current plate problem first.

Did you ever solve this? My first layers look exactly like the two images on the bottom right and mid right. Same with all the filaments, and I've cleaned my bed and everything.

Soap and water wash rather than alcohol.
