How to install MMU2S on working printer.

Well, got the MMU2S assembled and sitting aside.  have a printer-box.  Just received the ‘accessories’ to add the MMU2S to (just a couple of extender cables and a new top door.

Contemplating my next step.

How do I mostly install and rest the MMU2S without stopping the working printer.

Hmm.

I would strongly suggest that you do it all at once, and allow at LEAST a full day or more of down time.

In addition, I would suggest that you consider the following tweaks before installing:

1. Bowden fittings on the manifold so the tubes can be installed/removed/changed/un-jammed without a hassle.  Yes, the tubes should have a chamfer on one end.  Look VERY closely.  Remixed manifold is in the Printables section.

2. Those thumb screws to extend the idler tension screws.  Yes, you WILL be un-doing those at least on occasion.  (Look closely in the bottom photo.)  Again in the Printables section.

3. A switch (double pole!) to break the power to the MMU, so the machine can be conveniently used as a plain old single-color MK3S or a multi-color.  You WILL need to break both the positive and negative leads for it to work correctly.  (Some users say to break the data lines instead.  I have no experience with this method.)  The switch housing is in the Printables section.

Prepare for a MUCH longer than expected 'baptism by fire' as you get used to the MMU2S and climb the learning curve!  Be prepared for several issues.  I speak from experience and I have what appears to be one of the more reliable ones.

It will take some down time.

I added the MMU2S several months after assembling the printer.

It will take several hours to do the mods on the extruder, do the wiring, and do the initial checkout.

Do allow adequate time for futzing around and getting used to it and getting the initial test prints successfully done.

I would say it was about a day of clock time from when I took the machine down until I had the B&W two-color sheep test print printed.

Great.

So can I position the parts, connect them to the Einsy board and test them before I tackle the Extruder?

And I may need to go back and check the 5 PTFE tubes.  The instructions said their was a direction they were supposed to go in.  But when I examined them, I could not see the campher.

Is there a direction to the PTFE tubes?

Prusa video helped me get going again.

- Failed on an unload. There was a small piece of filament 2 stuck in the sensor.

- the Pause print appears to work well.

Spoke to soon. had to redo the step. Now filament 1 got stuck.

Loosened both idlers, lifted unit. Pulled white filament through

Disconneted Biden tube. Reshaped filament. Made sure Pinda detector was set at correct height.

Resassemlbed.

RE: How to install MMU2S on working printer.

The MMU2 /2S have a complex set of interractions, and sometimes we are our own worst enemy...

If you get a malfunction on a particular extruder (Filament) It is worth checking that the extruder bondtech gear and the MMU Pulley, have not damaged the filament, Failure to look for damage and cut back to good filament can lead to unexpected 'filament out' situations...  as the filament sensor senses the damaged part of the filament
I used 4X3 PTFE instead of the 4x2 ptfe that prusa supply for the filament input tubes etc. to reduce the friction in the filament feed.

the Extruder cold end liner PTFE tube, is a critical part of the filament re shaping process, make sure that you use the  correct 1.85 x 4 mm ptfe for this part.

good luck, Joan

86% of a sheep.  The brainless one.

The wipe tower eventually came unstuck, with all the stops.  Eventually the printer called it quits.

try reducing the filament temperature, to reduce stringing

or play with the ramming settings

The sheep's feet were fine... 'Twas the wiper block that wiped out.

I suppose I can slide the sheep at the right height. Print the missing part, and then glue this on his head.

Or give him a pirate hat.

I went back and fixed my build error.  I can see the difference in the tubes now. At the time, I could see no difference in the tubes.
