Excellent news. The current interpolation calculation/curve fit for the points between the 3x3 grid really seems terrible, and not much better than a guess.

That is great news. Will be nice having this as official firmware.

I'm currently using customized firmware with both N7 mesh and print fan whine reduction modifications. Both are definitely desirable options.
It was a bit nerve wracking to compile a version with both mods, on a Mac without OS specific directions.

Getting higher density mesh in a general release is a win for Prusa owners.

Are you guys really suffering from the current levelling? I fully agree it's always better to have a perfectly levelled bed but I'm using always 0.2mm for the first layer and was never a big thing for me.

I've been following the discussion, but for me it's never been an issue. I do the PINDA warmup routine at the start of a print and use 0.20mm 1st layer height for all but the smallest nozzles without issue. However, my understanding is that it's a bit of the luck of the draw as to whether the default routine works well with a specific bed. In addition to increasing the density of the probing, I suspect they're making changes to how the data is stored and used to further optimize it.

Prusa seems to be listening to the community and incorporating the proven techniques that work. That's the beauty of the open source approach.

For me it's the spring steel sheet. My Prusa sheet is just fine using 3x3, the 3rd party sheet is for crap and without 7x7 I can only use around half the build surface or suffer a mediocre at best first layer.

OTOH, maybe Prusa sees this as a solution to poor yields on their textured sheets.

A 5x5 seems like it would be a huge improvement. 7x7 or 9x9 is probably overkill.

My suggestions:
1) Let the user dictate the resolution in Slic3r.
2) Only calibrate the area that is actually being used for the current print. No need to level the entire bed with 81 positions if the print is small.

I expect worst-case it'll be something we can edit in startup gcode. I'm not sure if there are other options available in the marlin firmware. This is definitely going to be another one of those goldilocks issues. Some users will want more precision, others quicker startups.

Mesh bed levelling is not going to make any difference if this is the case since the PINDA works on the flat steel sheet not the PEI surface coating.

From my experience, most of the irregularity requiring mesh bed levelling comes from the heatbed which flexes as the temperature changes and not the textured PEI sheet.

Now if the Calibration Bed level correct points were increased to match the 7x7 or 9x9 quantity, that would be a complete new ball game and allow for perfect first layers, but I don't think there is enough memory capacity to be able to do this unless PRUSA find some way of maybe storing the lookup table on say the SD card.

Hmmm, If there is a yield issue with irregular thickness of the coating, then if an SD compensation map file were used, then each sheet could be sent out with a QR code which has a link for the compensation map for the surface, this could then be downloaded to the SD card.
3rd party sheets would not have this, so would be less desirable.

Is the 7x7 firmware compatible with the octoprint prusameshbed or bew visualiser plug-ins ?
I ask because I am getting very strange results with those plugs-ins since changing firmware......

The modified 7x7 MBL firmware that is available now, does work with the G81 output and is exactly how I levelled my printer bed, but it is not the be all and end all of levelling, I still needed to use Calibration bed level adjustment from the LCD to dial in a successful visual whole bed first print for the best results.
It's not 100% perfect due to high and low points in between the 7x7 probed points, but so much better than the 3x3 where no amount of adjustment / tweaking allowed me to print over the whole bed successfully.
