FW update, SD card not being read properly, printer crashing

I just updated to 3.10.1, where I was previously running I assume 3.10.0.

After flashing the firmware, it stopped correctly reading memory cards. Sometimes it'd show as empty, sometimes it would list only one of several files and repeat it infinitely. Card worked fine on PC. Reformatted the card (FAT), didn't improve anything. When selecting a file to print, the printer  hard resets itself and shows me an error message about a firmware crash.

Tried reflashing the latest firmware a couple times. Every time, the PC reported the flash was successful. But every time, I was left with this SD error.

1. Use canned air to blow out any crud in the SD card slot pins.

2. Clean the contacts on the card with a lint free cloth that is just damp with alcohol. Cycle the card in the slot a few times and clean the card contacts again. That may help clean any crud off the SD slot pins.

3. I recall some posts about a pin in the SD card slot getting stuck out of position but don't recall the fix. You should be able to check for that with a good light and just looking in the sl0t. Search the forum for a solution if that is the problem.

4. Try another SD card.

5. There have also been a few reports that the SD slot only works when the card is fully inserted then withdrawn slightly.

...and if you've been a little hasty it's possible to break a solder joint or a pcb track. Inspect the board, often these can be fixed with a touch from a soldering iron or a short bridging wire.

Well, I've tried all these things. Compressed air to clean out the slot, looked inside with a flashlight, all the pins look fine. I've also tried slowly inserting the SD card until the reader detects a card has been inserted, at which point it shows me an empty list, and if I back up in the menu it'll say that no SD is inserted, the same as if I just shoved it in as far as it'll go.

I've also tested half a dozen different cards, including the one that shipped with my printer that I haven't modified. They're all formatted properly, I can open up all the GCode files in GCodeViewer without a problem. But when inserted into the printer, it'll either show an empty list, or the printer will reset and give me a FW crash error.

It was working fine one minute, then I updated the firmware, and then it stopped working. Without even touching the card that was inserted at the time. A card was inserted and was probably there for several days, it was working fine, then I updated the firmware, and then immediately after the update, the printer couldn't read the card anymore even though I didn't touch it. And then after further testing, it's clear it just won't read any cards anymore and I have to print over USB.

I've had firmware updates cause problems in the past, and this problem started immediately after updating the firmware, so I can't help but think there's a connection. I'm in the middle of some projects right now, so I don't really have the time to roll back to an older firmware to test at the moment. I guess I'm mostly just posting this to see how widespread the problem is and if there's a known solution, but so far it seems like this issue is unique to me. Which is a knock against it being a firmware problem if it's unique to me, but it also seems really unlikely to be a hardware problem considering how it started.

Just peering in isn't enough.  Open the case, unplug and remove the board.  With a magnifying glass inspect the solder joints and tracks around the socket on both sides of the board.

I have the same issue after updating firmware.
It helps to have spare parts for troubleshooting.

Guys,

did you try to downgrade to 3.10.0 if this will disappear?

Same Problem here....

Downgraded the Software back to3.10.0, everything works again... Therefore, no hardware problem, its the software somehow..

But when downgraded it always shows on the display, new software awaylable, etc... annoying too...

After Updating to 3.10.1 the printer always crashes when printing from SD Card, USB printing works fine, i will work with the downgraded version until they fix it, but it´s still pretty annoying, since i mostly print via octo print and due to the older software, when starting a print i always have to go to my printer and press a buton to  confirm that i am aware, there is a new software available..

I just upgraded  and have the same issue as dstarr3 on a I3Mk3S. Note:  If I leave the card in and cycle the power it works.

Support said to perform a full reset, which you lose all setting history etc.

https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/full-system-refresh-original-prusa-i3_133258

Then flash to 3.9.3.3556 Which they provided over chat.

If the issue gets fixed after downgrading the firmware 3.9.3. Download the firmware 3.10.1 once again and use a different USB port from your PC when flashing it

Note: This smells like a firmware bug, with a recommended Vodoo magic solution.

I have to go out, so this will need to wait till tomorrow.

I am just going to try the 3.10.0 downgrade first. ...

RE: FW update, SD card not being read properly, printer crashing

So far we have been unable to reproduce this issue. We suspect some FW+HW combination but this is going to be difficult to track down.

@hannesplm, @dstarr3 please correct the following if I understood something wrong:

  • inserting an SD card results in either:
    • displaying "No SD card"
    • printer resetting and displaying FW crash error message
  • you tried several SD cards, even blank ones, original Prusa SD card with default content on it
  • downgrading to 3.10.0 "fixes" the problem on both printers of yours and the problem does not appear anymore

Can you please try flashing 3.10.1-RC1 to narrow the potential source of problems? I can think of several changes in the FW which could have influenced your machines.

I flashed mine to 3.10.0 and that did not fix the issue.

I tried 3.10.1 again on a freshly formatted SD card that did not work. Recycle the power supply and leaving the disk in does work. I will try RC1 later and if that doesn't work will reset to factory and go through that process.

Just tried prusa3d_fw_MK3s_MK3s+_3_10_1rc1_4587.hex. It seems to be working.

Can confirm, flashed prusa3d_fw_MK3S_MK3S+_3_10_1-RC1_4587.hex and the SD reader is working again.
