Firmware upgrade fails with verification fail + z axis crash into baseplate afterward

I recently upgraded my 3s+ to release 3.12.1.  The flash proceeds normally until the verification step and I then see this error:

avrdude-slic3r: verifying ...

avrdude-slic3r: verification error, first mismatch at byte 0x68c8 0x30 != 0xb0

avrdude-slic3r: verification error; content mismatch

I've tried downloading the file again but still get the same error.

The printer seems to perform without problems, it shows 3.12.1 as the correct version, so I tried a print I have run before.  Temp regulation was much better, but...

Midway through the print (it's a spiral vase mode test) the printer suddenly jammed the nozzle into the base - through the print - hard enough to punch through the coating, and the z-axis motors were making an ugly noise.  I aborted the print, and the printer raised z all the way to the top but the noise continued.  It took a power cycle to stop this and things now seem normal.  However I am not eager to try printing again.  I've tried reflashing but still get the verification error.  So perhaps this might be a reason for the ugly crash?  I have made many prints at the previous version (3.9.x) without this occurring so I feel it's the (perhaps badly flashed) version causing this.

I looked through the forum to see if this is an already reported issue but did not find anything.  I think in the meanwhile I'll go back to a previous firmware version to see if the flashing problems persist.

Update:  Flashing to a previous version also fails verification.  Verification fails at a different address every time I reflash, looks like a flipped bit.  Can't tell whether it's written badly or read badly (either isn't good).  Running Windows 10 on an HP Spectre x360 laptop with latest updates.  Don't have another Windows machine to try although I have Macs.

Was definitely a mistake on my part to try printing with firmware that didn't in all probability update correctly.

Update 2:  Tried flashing using my Macbook.  Same failure:

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 31.98s

avrdude-slic3r: verifying ...

avrdude-slic3r: verification error, first mismatch at byte 0x62c8 0x7f != 0xff

avrdude-slic3r: verification error; content mismatch

Cable or logic board?

Time to get on the chat with Prusa Support, me thinks. In particular because there's a fair chance it's logic board related. And I assume you re-downloaded the firmware and tried with a fresh copy?

Thank you for the reply.  Yes I have redownloaded and also tried flashing another version.  All fail verification in the same way - different addresses each time but the same bit is flipped.

I'll contact Prusa.
