Extruder multiplier MK3

Here is a dumb question, but I just wanted to be sure.

When I run S3D as it comes from the download, the extrusion multiplier is set to 1.0. In trying to calibrate it, it seems I need to decrease it down to about 0.82. When I do this, do I need to readjust the Live-Z setting? If yes, then how can I get the calibration of the printer to use the decreased flow setting I have determined to be correct? What are others using for their extruder multiplier? This value of 0.82 seems like quite a bit to decrease it, so I am wondering.

I am asking because it seems like the live-z setting is off and is now too high, even thought it was set as described in the thread "life adjust Z - my way". Again, if it needs to be done after the change, how do I get the file to use the new decreased value?

Thanks in advance, and sorry to be so dense as to ask something like this.

Hi Bob,

Live Z is set on the printer
BUT... if you are overextruding when you set Live Z, then Live Z will be too high when you are not over extruding!...

so the two are interlinked!

probably a good idea to reset Live Z.

did you reset the extrusion multiplier to .82? or did you adjust flow on the LCD?

if you did it, on the lcd, then you need to change the extrusion multiplier in S3D for future reference

I set it in the software, not on the LCD. I did not even know it was able to be set via the LCD. I am trying to get the printer calibrated so when I print parts, they come out correctly sized. Apparently as it comes from Prusa, it is over extruding, according to some tests I have run.

How would I set it via the LCD, and does that setting have any effect on what is printed afterwards, like the file for the "life adjust Z - my way"? Is there any details anywhere about setting the extrusion multiplier via LCD?

Also, what is your extrusion multiplier setting, just out of curiosity?

Re: Extruder multiplier MK3

In lcd settings there is an option to adjust Flow

This is a temporary setting that will reset if the printer is reset

Ideally, you'd like to have your Live-Z adjusted independent of any particular software or settings. One of the advantages of the "Life Adjust" prints is that they're consistent. If you get your printer Z zeroed in using that method, only minor adjustments should be used in any slicer software.

You can, of course, do Live-Z adjustment using your own prints. I do this for different nozzle sizes and materials. Just be aware of any adjustments you've made in your slicer software.

The important thing is to set the printer itself to some value that can be used as 0 as a basis for all of your software settings. I personally prefer to use a consistent print for calibration (e.g. the Life Adjust gcode file or my own created with the same settings) and adjust the Live-Z setting on the printer menu to that, then make only minor tweaks in slicer software such as extrusion multiplier. I find this helps if I switch slicers, or new versions with updated settings come out.

Also, what is your extrusion multiplier setting, just out of curiosity?Be aware, this can vary between slicers. Slic3rPE adds a tweak for extrusion at layers > 0.05mm. You can see this for yourself under Printer Settings->Custom G-Code->Start G-Code. Notice the line M221 S{if layer_height==0.05}100{else}95{endif}. The multiplier is tweaked to 95 for all other layer heights independent of any settings you make under Filament Settings->Filament->Extrusion multiplier. The setting you use for Slic3r may vary significantly from that used in other slicers. (Prusa apparently added this tweak due to a tendency of Slic3r to extrude a bit too much near the end of lines. There's a thread here on the Prusa forums on the topic.)
