Extruder Failure after First Layer

Hi Guys, I have been looking through all the other "Extruder Clicking" posts and still have not sorted my issue.

Symptoms:

Audible click, under extrusion during rapid movements after first layer. First layer/z height is spot on!

History:

I was printing PLA nicely for months, tried my luck at PETG with mixed results, moved back to PLA and issues began.

What have I tried:

1. Cold pull

2. Nozzle clean

3. Adjusting tension pulley

4. Checked pully is seated/aligned properly.

What I have not tried:

1. Pull extruder off to check PTFE tube.

What else can I check/try guys? Spent more than a few hours already. Frustrating that the first layer is spot on, but as soon as it wants to speed up I'm having issues. I'm guessing its a small blockage.... thoughts??

I am also scared now that going between PETG and PLA might cause further issues. Should I be doing anything special when switching between the two?

RE: Nozzle

You could have a partially clogged nozzle.  I would try replacing it.  It could also be the PFTE tubing.

Lastly, you flow rate might be too high.

Hi Guys, After a complete tear down of the extruder here is what I found. (And I hope that it helps others.)

1. Idler Gear - The round rod that holds the gear in was not central in the plastic parts and appeared to be resting on one edge. Some reading on the net indicates this would be a point of failure. I moved it so that it was central and no flex could be felt in it.

2. Nozzle full clean. - Heated the nozzle right up with a torch, put it in water a couple times and it cleaned it out nicely.

    - When taking the nozzle off the heatblock and heat break may seem a bit loose, the nozzle locks it in when tightening up.

3. checked PTFE tube, no sign of damage.

4. When taking the

Idler

#1 is common.  It has to remain well seated to work.  I have had this problem in the past.  I am glad you figured it out,

Happy printing.
