Err: MINTEMP BED problems

I've got two Mk3 Kit Prusas that I bought last June and I couldn't be happier on the whole with their performance.

Until about 2 weeks ago when one of them with almost 11oo hrs on the clock, suddenly stopped part way through a 14 hr print at a height of around 14cm with the message Err: MINTEMP BED. It just stopped mid-print and sat there.

I sliced the model and combined the print from that point on my other Prusa so the print was saved but now I'm down a working printer.

I contacted support via the live chat on the Prusa website and explained the problem asking if this was covered by my year's warranty. 'Warranty only covers failed parts, not broken parts.' was the reply. I haven't broken anything, something has failed. I was given a link to a page of checks to run through and I couldn't find the problem. I tried a print and it failed on the first layer. I ran through everything again and again nothing obvious. I tried a small print and it worked so I figured as per some similar problems from users online that moving a cable tie or jiggling a wire solved the issue (which suggests something is loose right so not a 100% fix to my mind).

I have limited my printing to one of the Prusas and today I decided to strip down the problematic machine to upgrade it to a MK3S and maybe in the process I'd solve the problem?  No joy, all seemed well, recalibrated everything and double checked, set up a print and it has failed on the second layer.

So all I can think of, going by others solving this online I thought I might detach the power lead connections to the bed and check for breaks in there more thoroughly and if I do find a problem, shorten the wires taking out any problem that I might find.

If this is where the problem lies, is this not something that should be covered by the warranty?

RE: Err: MINTEMP BED problems

At this point it's probably considered normal wear and tear... The cables flex constantly in use and will wear out at some point.

Though it's up to PR to determine what constitutes premature failure vs expected wear...

I agree, some machine's are going to be used way more that others and every component has a 'life' but it would be good to know what's expected and perhaps be offered the opportunity to buy a replacement at full price or discounted or free replacement.

The Prusa print farm itself must generate some data for parts wear and tear as regards print time.

Some extra information:

Prusa Mk3 kit #1 bought 6th June 2018 has 2298 printing hours and works perfectly.

Prusa Mk3 kit #2 bought 28th June 2018 has 1100 printing hours and suddenly has the Err: MINTEMP BED failures.

Multiple recalibrating, checking, double and triple checking of all possibilities and checking all the circuits it turned out to be a fault thermistor.

Lots of great help walking me through all the steps from the Prusa team and the part replaced as still within the warranty.

Very happy to have both my machines back up and running.

Most of the time this is a thermistor.  Good to see the odds were correct.  That is cheap to replace.

RE: Err: MINTEMP BED problems

I have the same issue with small objects and mostly ABS. Here, the bed temp. jumps from 100 to 110°C after the first layer. On small objects the time isn't sufficient to achieve the needed temperature, and the print fails with "Err: MINTEMP BED".

I addressed this by creating a new profile for small objects where the temp. jump isn't that big.

Is there a chance to get this addressed in the next firmware update automatically?

Best,

Andy
