Dual extruder possible or even needed for separate filler/support material?

What is involved in adding the possibility to use a separate filler filament for models that require lots of supports?
Its a shame to see so much of my nice PETG filament used up for supports.. .
Do you need a dual extruder or how does this typically work?
Cheers,
Noob Jon

Re: Dual extruder possible for separate filler?

The original prusa range offer multi material upgrades to enable dissimilar material prints. However most alternative materials are likely to be more expensive than PETG. And the MMU needs a purge block which adds time and material overheads.

So it might be cheaper in the long run to sacrifice the PETG

Thanks Joan.
I had wrongly assumed support material would be dirt cheap...
Now I feel much better about the wasted support material! 😀
Is PETG recyclable in the form we use it in?

Jon

All plastics are recyclable in the correct environment, unfortunately this often relies on manufacturers (You and I and all other 3d printers) marking the products with material type indicators, which we often don't do.... 🙁 or keeping the materials in seperate containers which we often don't do...

however an offset is to use filament that has been recycled before we get it...

e.g. https://www.filamentive.com/shop/

I have a number of filamentive reels of filament.
filamentive also accept empty spools (any manufacturer) in return for discount vouchers.
and they have changed to cardboard spools and packaging
they do rPETG, rPLA and rABS

regards Joan
