Hi everyone,

I have done a mod upgrade to my Prusa MK3S+  and I don't know what the issue is.

Dragon Hotend High Flow. It printed for around 1h, and then simply couldn't push enough filament through. 

If I start a new print, it won't work, I have to unload and then load the filament again.

This varies though. Sometimes it is after a few minutes, sometimes more.

  • I've played with the tension screw
  • I've added more thermal paste between the heating source and the heat block
  • The PTFE tube fits correctly
  • The Experimental feature for the motors is enabled to lower the temps a bit (the motor is a very hot)
  • I've even increased the volumetric flow from 15mm3 to 20mm3

I am stumped, this is a 100euro 'drop in replacement' yet... I simply can't get it to work. Any advice is welcome!

Do note that it was really hard to get the filament flowing. Heated the nozzle to 275, and I had to leave it there a bit to be able to push through, otherwise it wouldn't budge. After it started flowing, cooled it off just like in the manual/website and this came out, seems clean.

Nozzle

I was wondering if the issue could be the nozzle? I'm using the one that came with the Phaetus, and I think it is not a normal brass model, right? 

Should I change the temps I'm using? Increase them a bit?

I changed the nozzle and printed another benchy. Same result though, roughly after the same amount of time.

Have your tried printing a temperature tower.  I think this is either a filament issue or a temperature issue.

I have not, but I will. I doubt it is a filament issue, I'm using prusament that works perfectly usually.

Could it be that it is a high flow hot end and I'm using a 0.4mm nozzle?

I cannot print it, the 0.4 nozzle gets clogged before finishing the first 225C part.

You sure you're printing PLA? I've seen stuff like this when I accidentally put a spool of PETG in instead of PLA. 

Formerly known on this forum as @fuchsr -- until all hell broke loose with the forum software...

Reminds me that when I started to investigate the Dragon, I saw a boatload of reports of clogging with the high flow version, so I decided to go with the standard flow version instead, which has served me well.

Do you print inside an enclosure? I remember that as one of the scenarios that people reported make the high flow clog.

Formerly known on this forum as @fuchsr -- until all hell broke loose with the forum software...

so you're printing with a dragon high flow with a 0.4 nozzle? What temps are you using? What nozzle?

Upping your print speed in a clog is only going to increase clicking.  Imagine increasing the flow in a hose when you have it compressed, it is not going to increase flow.  Have you tired to clear the clog?  I do cold pulls, use acupuncture needles, and will use 1.5mm welding rods.  It all depends on where the clog is.

I remove the clog, extrude some material to make sure it is unclogged, then print with the increased speeds.
