No I did mean 0.75.

0.75line width x 0.3layer height = 2.5 x (0.45line width x 0.2layer height)

That 0.75 was for ease of calculations.

Martin

Oh! Well, good to know. At least to me, that in itself is very interesting. So the old saw that line width be 120% of nozzle width is evidently a myth. What is the true rule of thumb? If 0.75mm was for ease of calculations, how wide can one really go with a 0.4mm nozzle before print quality suffers?

Probably around 0.9mm as the flat tip of the cone is 1mm in diameter.

I just now noticed a couple of interesting thingiverse things:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2276997

You would presumably need the first thing in order to use the second thing with your Volcano.

I have seen Metacolin's cover before. 🙂

Doing my own as part of my Full Build Volume Volcano Mod"

Main difference between my part and Colins's is I have tried to make it easier to fit and remove a sock the the Volcano block. I have not printed or tested my W2 version yet. The W1 version that I have done a test print and fit with however is directly comparable to Metacolin's.

Should be plenty of room for the sock. The block is vertical so even roomier than v6. Not following your concern. You can see I have a sock on mine. This has volcano raised to keep same print volume as v6 but still roomy.

A few people were saying that they found it hard to fit a sock on the Volcano using Metacolin's version. So mine addresses that issue. Also my full build volume mod is designed to work without any firmware changes that the Skelestruder requiers for its 3 to 1 belt drive.

There is no firmware required for that. Just gcode cmd to change E steps.

Does your mod also support v6, or just volcano? Because v6 will require firmware change in that case (as I learned) due to increased Z range.

Re: Does someone want to know how fast they can print/extrude? look here

My mod supports both V6 and Volcano with no firmware changes. It has adjusters that slip onto the X-Ends between the ends and the trapezoidal nuts when used in V6 mode.

Testing The Left Z-Ends With V6 Adjuster

That is my machine testing the left Z-ends with V6 adjuster fitted and the new X-Carriage. The right side is still the default R2 Z-Ends. It is working with no issues.

My adjusters should work with the Skelestruder as well.

I will be as soon as I have finished testing and fitting them to my machine.

I did the metacollin upgrade. Took only about 10 minutes.

After printing the 2nd thing, I realized the second thing won't work with the MK3. No way to attach it to the MK3, because the screw hole is on the wrong side. So, scratch that. I like the concept though.

Which blower duct do people here favor for the MK3? Presently I've reverted back to the original Prusa blower duct, which now works with the Volcano thanks to the metacollin upgrade.

I currently use the default Prusa one although I have some ideas in my head for an improved one. I want to finish my Volcano mod first though. 🙂
Currently I have the full mod fitted with V6 adjusters and all that is left to do is fit the volcano block and extruder cover.

I think we may want a more powerful blower fan for part cooling. Either a single piece, like maybe this:
https://www.amazon.com/GDSTIME-75x75x30mm-Bearing-Computer-Brushless/dp/B016UCKBUA/ref=pd_sim_147_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B016UCKBUA&pd_rd_r=BVHPF555PNT1VZ96P57Y&pd_rd_w=Z6WUj&pd_rd_wg=G5ELq&psc=1&refRID=BVHPF555PNT1VZ96P57Y
or else possibly double up with the existing kind, like this:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2978427

or run a higher voltage blower to get faster blower speeds.

Thoughts?

It is not the fan that is the problem. It moves plenty of air. Just with the existing fan nozzle design far too much of it is wasted on the heater block and not enough hitting the printed part where needed. This can be seen by the sudden drop in the temperature reported by the heater block thermistor when the part cooling fan kicks in.

Re: Does someone want to know how fast they can print/extrude? look here

Good point. Glad I asked.

I did print this JLTX cooling with a view design:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2740613
hoping that it would be compatible with the metacollin's volcano upgrade, but it isn't. I like the concept though.

So, I'm back to using the default Prusa blower duct. I did briefly try this one:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2872381
but it's bulky and obscures the view of the nozzle even more.

Well, unless anyone has suggestions, I don't see any more good cooling upgrades to do at this time that are compatible with the volcano.

Well my full build volume volcano mod is complete. So I will start working on my print fan nozzle in the next few days.

Re: Does someone want to know how fast they can print/extrude? look here

I have now run my first tests with a plated copper volcano with a 0.4mm nozzle. For my first 2 tests I used Prusa Silver Grey PLA as that what was on the printer from dialling in the live Z.

The first test I ran was at 205°C/195°C, 100%fan, 60°C bed, 0.75mm line width 0.3mm layer height and 20mm/s initial speed. This is colder than the Prusa PLA profile.

It started under extruding at 300% - 13.5mm³/s and the extruder started clicking at 400% - 18mm³/s. As this was colder than the default profile the low speeds were to be expected.

The second test I ran was at 215°C/210°C, 100%fan, 60°C bed, 0.75mm line width 0.3mm layer height and 20mm/s initial speed.

It started under extruding at 450% - 20.25mm³/s and the extruder started clicking at 650% - 29.25mm³/s. A bit disappointing I was expecting to get 45mm³/s here as that is 3 times the volumetric limit Prusa have used for the standard V6 block.

Yeah, the extrude volume for PLA on the volcano seems almost the same as for PETG. Who knows why.
PETG sticks to itself better, though, which is why I've settled on it over PLA.

Sunlu PLA+ with a plated copper volcano with a 0.4mm nozzle at 205°C/195°C, 100%fan, 60°C bed, 0.75mm line width 0.3mm layer height and 20mm/s initial speed. This is the temperature profile I use for this filament and as there appeared to be no stringing I will continue to use.

It started under extruding at 450% - 20.25mm³/s and the extruder started clicking at 650% - 29.25mm³/s. Exactly the same as the Prusa silver grey PLA.
