"Crash detected" message during print
I am on my 3rd print of my assembled MK3 kit - the 150 micron frog 🙂 The flat logo and batman logos printed well.
So, the extruder periodically moves up to the front left corner and the LCD display says "crash detected", and then it goes back to printing.
My z live is about -1.1. What is going on? What adjustments should I make to avoid these crashes?
Example where it started giving crash messages...
Re: "Crash detected" message during print
Hi there,
the Mk3 detects "crashes" by detecting the Axis motors skipping steps.
This happens if
- the Nozzle is colliding horizontally with something on the build plate (like the model)
- the X carriage colliding with something other
- the bed (Y axis) colliding with something around the printer
- one of the Axis having too much resistance to moving because of obstructions on the linear rods of the axis
- one of the Axis having too much resistance to moving because of faulty bearings
- and so on
if the Mk3 detects a crash, it moves the nozzle out of the way and trys to resume the print.
Can you imagine wich of the above might be the cause in your case?
Re: "Crash detected" message during print
You can acttually look up which axsis 'crashed', that may help.
I get 'a lot' of Y crashes for reasons I can't understand. It is also dependend on what I print. Often I get non crash at all, with oder Models I get a lot (for no reason I can understand).
Re: "Crash detected" message during print
I looked at the "Fail Stats", and all the crashes are Y (same as darKing above). I will try to pay close attention to this axis as I'm printing.
Re: "Crash detected" message during print
I have the same issue. Y is constantly triggering chrash detection.
Just disable it....
I will try to remove the Nylon Filament and the spiral cable wrap in the next days and see if that somewhat hindered the Y movement.
But my honest opinion: it is not ready to be enabled in firmeware. not sure what triggers it. but since the motor is not loosing any steps if i have it dissabled i guess it safe to say it triggers to easy...
Never had any layer shift or other problem with it dissabled.
Edit: if you see any problems with it dissabled then you have to check the mechanics of your printer. if not then problem "solved" or at least put of for another day...
Re: "Crash detected" message during print
What Slicer do you guys use?
I'm also trying to find out what causes it, obviously. Maybe we can combine our brains.
I'm producing an armada of Benchys once a again. Cause it happens to them on a regular basis. I really can't find any machincal trouble when moving the bed by hand and I'm pretty puzzled.

I had the same thought! My y-axis "crash detected" often occur after the build has reached a certain height, maybe 0.5-1" in height. Nothing changed to cause y-axis crashes, except, the hard-plastic spiral cable wrap from the extruder gets in a different position as the extractor gets higher. So, I also suspect the nylon filament and/or spiral cable wrap could be a cause. I will also try some experiments to reduce this common error.

Why do you think the Spiral Wrap of the Extruder (X-Axis) interferes with the movement of the Y-Axis? Just curious.

The 'old' assembly also had spiral wrap and a Nylon filament in it, but my MK3 came with the textile sleeve and no Nylon. ( http://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/7.+Heatbed++%26+PSU+assembly+%28textile+sleeve%29/589?lang=en )
Re: "Crash detected" message during print
I have the newer design cable wrap. I also very carefully built this thing- keeping in mind you BARELY want to tighten the ubolts down on the Y-Axis bearings. I also completely washed the anti-rust oil from all the linear bearings and lubed them with high quality RC car bearing oil (a very light but super effective bearing oil). In my opinion, lithium grease is too heavy for these bearings- they will tend to drag as opposed to roll smoothly. Light weight oil works best. I also lubed the z-axis lead screws with super lube synthetic PTFE grease.
I have never had a crash detected, after several hundred hours of printing. My printer is very very quiet- hence no 'drag' on any of the axis.

I've had a whole bunch of crashes... most of which are due to things I've zip tied to the extruder, getting below the nozzle. 😎
Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.

The cable and sheathing coming from the extruder is stiff, and has a unique bend-position-radius for any change of X, Y or Z. So an increase in resistance in the Y direction could theoretically come from a change in X or Z position. I'm not certain, and "grasping for straws" trying to figure out why the y-axis would crash when I can see no obvious reason watching the extruder movements.
I'll join the new y-axis crash detection thread, and try to figure it out with others ... https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3-f30/y-axis-fake-crash-detections-let-s-debug-t15501.html

hi, I also have problems with the y-axis crash, but I can't find this thread.
RE: "Crash detected" message during print
iam printing ASA for 1st Time in a closed housing.
Before i had no Problems and not a single crash detection.
Is that maybe Temp related? 40°c inside heat up all parts also. Steppers, PSU, Mobo....
RE: "Crash detected" message during print
In my case, using the Prusa V2 enclosure to print ASA, I was seeing frequent Y crashes above a certain Z level. The issue was caused by having the printer too far back into the enclosure, so that the cable bundle coming off the bed was hitting the back window. This also caused the belt self test results to report unexpectedly high values (270) or failing. By moving the printer forward to avoid this, the belt self test result is now reading 240. Furthermore this fixed the issue where crash detection was triggering during printing.
RE: "Crash detected" message during print
some weeks/kilograms of filament gone.
summary for me is that it must temp related.
i never had a single crash again as long iam printing PETG,PLA.
not even with a closed door. Only when Printing ASA at 250/100°c
the only solution now is disable crash detection while printing ASA.

I have a similar thing, I printed PLA just fine, then tried using ABS and keep getting a crash detected in the Y as well. But nothing seemed wrong in the print Disabling it and trying again, 3rd time charm hopefully.
Should I crack my enclosure at the top? Maybe things are getting to warm.
RE: "Crash detected" message during print
I was still getting some Y crashes after checking all the mechanical parts. What ended up fixing it for me was adding a fan to the enclosure, mainly pointed at the electronics. A friend said they had the same issues and leaving one of the enclosure doors open worked. Prusa just isn't meant for ABS/ASA prints. My final solution was to print Voron parts and build a Voron printer for my production runs.
RE: "Crash detected" message during print
I can reproduce it and its exactly that. no matter what filament i print. when enclosure comes nearly 40°c, Y-crashes happen.
Discord community told me it is well known and that crash detection is a useless function that makes more problems then any kind of help.
(they talking about that prusas dont have any switches for the steppers and its even normal on calibrating that it "crashes" in XYZ.
when i print ASA i disable crash detection and (no wonder) it works flawless.
RE: "Crash detected" message during print
@zemso
So do I. Enclosure Temp above 40 Degrees and the crashes start. What follows are some smaller Layer shifts. So I disabled Crash Protection for ASA as well
