Calibration Failure
This is a copy of a letter I sent to [email protected]. I am ok with waiting for them to help me, but i thought I would post it here to see what people think. I am tempted to install the new firmware, but do not want to make changes until advised.
This is the problem.
This refers to Mk 3 No ####
I made this from the kit and it has performed well, showing 1 km of filament used.
I had a troublesome clog, so I ordered a nozzle and PTFE tube from the US E3d stockists. I have installed these. I did no work on the X,Y or Z axes.
Now the printer passes all the self test OK. The axes move freely with the steppers disabled. If I move them from the settings menu, they move freely, 255 mm in X and 214 mm in Y.
When I try to calibrate XYZ, I get an error message, "Calibration failed! Check the axes and run again."
This is not actually in your list. I have reset the XYZ calibration, and performed factory reset, several times.
Please advise me as to how to proceed

And when exactly does it fail? I'm sure you watched the calibration procedure.

Ok the sequence is like this. I turn the rods so that the X axis is below the maximum Z level. Then I switch on, and a notice comes up "not calibrated yet"
So I go to Calibration and hit Calibrate XYZ. , go through the screens telling me to put a piece of paper down. Then it autohomes, runs the x carriage up to max Z ( is that part of the autohome?), makes a brief rattle sound and then gives me the error message.

So he is giving you the error already when going up? (it's going up to level the X axis. The rattling sound is -> It pushes both sides to the end of the Z-axis to make X parallel).
Or is he going up. rattling, going down and then gives the msg?

I have received a reply from info@ and I am in active discussion with them. It seems a bit fickle to carry on two relationships, so consider this just fyi.
The machine worked very well for 6 weeks, and the only work I did was on the hot end, so misassembly of the z components is unlikely. When I hit calibrate XYZ , it auto homes, and the X axis rises to the top Z position. It then stops, stays there, and I see the error message

I would consider doing a factory reset
1 Press and release the reset button(marked X and positioned under the control
knob on the LCD panel)
2. Press and hold the control knobuntil you hear a beep
3. Release the control knob
4 all data
Then again, how far from the top would you say you are? 10 mm 100mm 200mm? I am betting there is a minimum amount that it thinks it should raise and if you are below that limit you might get the calibration error. If you can run it all the way down maybe a few mm from the bed.

Done many factory resets. I can not run it down with the settings axis move, but I will try your suggestion manually.

Maybe check your pinda probe, i have had some strange issues with calibartion when my Pinda went bad.

Does the X drive move up and hit the screw heads?
If they do not, you probably turned the spool holder back and forth.

Since the Pinda is never near the bed, and passed the self test, I can not see how it can be in the problem.
The x axis does indeed touch the two screws you show. If by spool holder you mean the round disk on top of the z axis nuts, I tightened the screws a tiny bit, but they do not touch.

My guess would be, that with "Spool holder" he reffers to the thing that is holding the Spool of Filament. Like in... the spool holder.

The spool holder is not on the printer. I have a Lack table enclosure with a custom spool holder on top. Right now the printer is outside as it is too confining to work on this problem. It is unclear to me what is the theory behind the question.

Post a picture of your Hot End. You might have the same issue I did where I didn't assemble the hot end correctly and it was too far down.

Looks OK to me. The hot end never moves from the home position. I think that the Z calibration might be happening, if the Z reference is the top.
It occurs to me that the error message is not in the list on the site. Does anyone have the expertise to look at the source code and see what circumstance triggers that message? No reply from prusa support in 3 days.

In this foto we can see the Extruder Assembly. What we actually can't see is the hotend!
Where is your FIlament Sensor Wire? Is that in the way maybe?
Now since your in Photo Mood. Can you take a photo with the same position of the extruder, but from the front? So we can thee the Z Axis and the endstops?

redis some of the assembly to tuck the wires in more neatly. Temporarily removed the front fan to show nozzle more clearly.

the extruder nozzle seems to be a long way out.
whilst this will not change the overall length of the assembly it will move the heat block closer to the extruder housing, causing the potential for melting the plastic, and reducing the effectiveness of the heat break by trapping hot air in that area.
the nozzle should be screwed fully into the heat block, then unscrewed half a turn, then the heatbreak tube should be tightened against the nozzle whilst hot, to ensure a leak free assembly

I'm back calibrated!! 😀
I followed Joans advice, took down the complete extruder/hot end and redid the nozzle placement. Then I decided that the problem had to be in the sensing of the Z axis position, so I did a lot of random activity, loosened the top pieces and then tightened them, also the top covers of the trapezoidal nuts. I moved the X axis way down to the bed, while the nozzle was off, by turning the lead screws. I notice that disable steppers did not disable the Z motors, so I had to switch off to do that. Is that so in everyone's experience? . Then I ran the X axis up to the max using Settings/Move axis/Z. I noted that I could move up, but not back down. When I tried to move back down, it did not move, but reset the indication to zero. At some stage after I tried the Calibrate XYZ, and it did it. It is a bit unsettling that I have no idea why and I will be nervous about any further calibration, like when I put in back in my Lack enclosure. 🙄 No help at all from Prusa, I was going to give Michele a week before whining. The particular error message is not listed on the site, but must be pulled up by some input. It would be nice to work out what happened. Anyway, my thanks to all the folks who gave me help and sympathy.
