Re: CAD models for MK3 parts

I converted a bunch. Had to hack SCAD freeCAD flow to get some clean. Let me know if you want to add to your collection.

I actually converted the files to STEP a few days ago. Just posted them. Thanks for the offer though!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I converted the new R2 files to STEP format and posted them on my GitHub fork (as well as GrabCAD and Thingiverse).

They are available for download here:
https://github.com/jzkmath/Original-Prusa-i3/tree/MK3/Printed-Parts

I will post the SolidWorks model if/when I have time to do so, as my course-load is really picking up!

One thing to keep an eye on is Prusa uses selective infill which you can see easily in Y idler. I didn’t catch that when I first converted, wondered why I had thin cubes left over.

What do you mean by "selective infill". Is it a high dentsity or a special pattern?

I searched - found a reference with pic here: https://www.prusaprinters.org/original-prusa-i3-mk2-3-months-update/

Thanks for the information!
I have searched, but been completely blind to machines other than MK3 😆

selective density. You can do this in slic3r itself, but it takes manual intervention using modifiers. So to be consistent and automatic they modify the part by putting in strategic "cuts" to force internal perimeters and "tie" the infill together. It adds strength to those places.

Interestingly they used to have it in the X ends, but removed it and thickened that section externally. Not sure why as no notes on Github. Y idler and a few other parts still have it. If you use the Z holders from gregsaun he added some there too.

Re: CAD models for MK3 parts

I tested "sensitive infill" on a part, but I could only see the change in Simplify3D, not in Slic3r.
Otherwise, I usually make reinforcements with a pattern of small round holes, but it was just as good with rectangles 😉

Finished the SolidWorks Assembly. They are now on GitHub, GrabCAD, and Thingiverse.

I found a mistake in my conversion of the R2 X motor end. I checked yours and you have a similar but different mistake. Check the end pockets of the rod sockets. You have an extra cylinder in one of them. The last one should stay and be union'd with the main body (I cut them by mistake in mine).

I see what you mean. there should be 35.5 mm for the holes and there isn't! I tried fixing that to no avail (removing or leaving them never matches up) If you have successfully converted it already, I would appreciate a copy so that I can add it to the assembly.

I will get it to you when I get home tonight.

Re: CAD models for MK3 parts

Does anyone have a solid file for the einsy base? I'd like to modify it but can't get a good conversion.

That was literally the only file I couldn't convert over to step.

I've spend about an hour cleaning it up in F360 and have a pretty good result. The chamfers and fillets are still a pain though.

Thanks for that. I replaced your part in my Assembly and put the changes online.

I have a SolidWorks part file of my modified version with cable mounts ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2794755 ). I can dummy it back to the standard Prusa Einsy base if you want.

I don't see the solid files on the thingiverse page, could you post them?

Yeah I'll upload once I get off work. Do you want a specific format or does STEP work?
