Y-axis rattle fix.
Ever since i bought my i3 MK3 there's been an annoying rattle coming from the printer. It's been driving me nuts, like really NUTS, because MK3 was supposed to be quiet, not rattly. The main problem was that i couldn't really pinpoint where the rattle is coming from!
I would describe the noise as running a fork across the cheese grater while simultaneously listening to your neighbours demolishing their entire flat with an industrial grade heavy weight jackhammer and I'm not even exaggerating, truly horrible. (and for the record, I know that no FDM 3D printer is ever going to be noiseless, but this was just too much to bare!!)
And today I had just about enough of it and went on a rattle hunt, inspecting every little nook and cranny on my MK3, feeling where my printer vibrates the most. And thank god! I found the bloody bastard. Turns out my printer was rattling because my Y-axis stepper motor was not secure enough to the frame, and I'm not talking not bolted on enough. I think the problem is in the plastics, that are just not stiff enough. So i just zipped tied the motor to the frame and really made sure it is snug as possible and that seems to have fixed the problem.
Here's a picture:
I really have to say it is as quiet as a baby sleeping right now, so if any one is dealing with the same noise issues right now, maybe give it a try. It is simple, just use the zip ties that came with the printer.
I'm really curious am I the only one with this problem?
And for the Prusa research team: have you found this problem thus far? Maybe a stiffer motor holder? idk
Re: Y-axis rattle fix.
Interesting find. If you don't want some janky looking zip ties on your motor you can browse Thingiverse and print an alternate Y motor mount. There are quite a few, so take your time picking one out and read the comments to be sure others are satisfied with it. I can't remember which model I chose, but I beefed up my Y Axis mounts a while back.
Re: Y-axis rattle fix.
Honestly my name is literally Janko sooo... janky it is
But I'll definitely check it out 😀

Here you go, it also improves the Y axis end stop so that your bearing is not used as a stop!.
The guy who has done this JLTX also has some really good designs for other parts of your printer and studying them can really help you going forward with your own designs, I learnt more about 3D printing making some of his designs than just reading about it as some elements of his designs cover bits you would not necessarily think about being new to 3D printing.
You do realise this cable tie improvement of yours is the first step on a slippery slope to achieve ultimate perfection ? 😀
Normal people believe that if it is not broke, do not fix it. Engineers believe that if it is not broke, it does not have enough features yet.

Hey you know what my grandpa always said, if it works it works 😀

I prefer "If it works, fix it until it doesn't" 😆
