What is the largest spool size the stock Prusa MK3 spool holder can realistically hold?
What is the largest spool size the stock Prusa MK3 spool holder can realistically hold (without modifications).

I'm not 100% sure, but without any bearings I would think you'd start getting friction the heavier the spool gets. I stopped using the stock one a long time ago and went to one with bearings.

I have used a 2.3kg spool from 3dJake (brand was Extrudr). It fit but was close, a few mm clearance.

I never got to test this exactly. I stopped using the stock spool holder because I put the printer in an enclosure and the spool holder wouldn't fit, even without a spool on it lol

Prusa supply the files for a larger version of the stock spool-holder. It works well up to at least 2kg.
Cheerio,

I made a spool holder for exactly that. Lets you use the prusa arms or use arms with bearings. Fits in enclosure with plenty of room for changing spools.

Do think about leverage and how much weight it would take on the top frame to tip over the printer. The more weight you put up there, the more that weight is going to shake - so there is a practical upper limit before your shaking spool causes visible defects in your prints. With that aside, I think a 400lb spool should do it.

Based on all of these responses. It sounds like the answer is 1KG spools. Thanks everyone!
