What glue with PETG

Hello:

Can anyone please inform me as to what would be the best glue to use with PETG?

I have designed a part that has a smaller section and larger section and the part breaks at where the two join.

Thanks.

Hello Tom, welcome!

i personally use some simple superglue for petg, but check out this nice article about gluing 3D prints

I'm not an expert. Ma parlo anche italiano 😉

I use Gorilla Super Glue.  However, unlike PLA, you have to press the parts together a lot longer. What I found helps is to put a thin layer on and let it dry, than reapply before you press the parts together.

I use formula 76 solvent cement for my lure bodies in PETG.  It is gooey/thick and sticks to the petG really well.  Takes a complete dry though - about a day with clamping - to get "throw it against the wall" glue strength.

What brand or manufacturer makes "formula 76 solvent cement"?  Im not able find it with Google and the only things that pop up are concrete cement and 3M spray adhesive.  Many thanks!

I just glued two small pieces of PETG together with Oatey brand Purple Primer for PVC and CPVC. Their clear should work as well. Make sure its the primer and not the cleaner (different chemicals).

I cant pull the pieces apart. I mention the brand because different brands can use different chemicals and this one has the chemicals people say work. And it seems to work.

Thanks for this tip! I had a can of Spears Primer 68, clear version lying around. I remember buying it online when I was doing a large PVC project. I believe HD and Lowes has similar things in store. Just remember to get primer. Here is a good read:

https://pvcguy.com/cleaner-primer-glue/

Anyway, I tried it on my PETG prints. It works perfectly. I cannot take them apart. I did let the joint sit overnight. At first (before setting) it was moving. So it does take some time to set.

One thing worth mentioning that it is a very thin liquid and flows very easily. It comes with a dauber inside, but that it just too big for applying it with any precision. I will buy one of those applicator bottles with a needle and a cover. That will do best with this liquid.

I've had pretty good results using tetrahydrofuran.  I was able to buy a small bottle off Etsy in the US.  Ethyl acetate works ok too.

For most 3d print plastics, if you want a more forgiving bond, I suggest Aileen's The Ultimate Multi-Surface adhesive. Any hobby shop will have it.  They now have a quick(er) drying version.

For a more rigid bond, I suggest Dr. Mike's Model & Crafter Glue.  Amazon will usually have it.  I've met Mike in person and he has forgotten more about adhesives than I will ever know.

Just compared some oatey purple primer with pvc and cpvc cement. the cement additionally contains pvc resin and cpvc resin respectively.

I am glueing pvc pipe to some petg connectors and the cement seems to be working for my purpose. looks like the ingredients are in a different order between the primer and cement. If this follows the same pattern as food ingredients then I presume it means there are variations in the amount of acetone and mek between the two.

I will say, based on my limited experience so far that of the fitting is fairly tight, the cement bonds the parts fairly quickly. some of the pieces with more tolerance take longer to ’stick’.
