SD Card use in the printer question

is there a limit on nested folders and files on the SD reader in the printers OS?

i organized a backup sd card on an old larger 32 sd card and I don't seem to see the deepest nested folders when it is in the printer.

I'm sure there's some limit, but I'm able to go several layers deep without problem. I'm using long filenames with spaces as well. I know DOS had some limit on maximum path lengths. How deep are you nesting?

I am using a Toshiba 16GB FlashAir W04 SD card, and it does get a bit "confused" if I send files to it, then navigate using the front panel. Navigating a level back towards the root of the filesystem fixes the problem quickly.

Edit: Also, what filesystem is the card formatted with? Does it appear normal on your desktop (Windows?) machine?

yes I was seeing the confusion thing but my nest was about 15 folders deep 🙄 I will reorganize to something simpler... the tiny lcd screen that 3d printers love to use is one of my least pleasant things about using them it was the same on the delta I have.... you have to wait for file names more than a few characters long to scroll past to see if you have the right one and then you have the wait time as it sorts the SD every time you change.... looking forward to the Duet in the delta upgrade I plan for my xmas gift for myself as has a nice 7" touch screen option that I will take... did you see the brackets I printed for the upgrade that I posted with my question about top layer problems... I will have a nice little box of upgrade parts when I need them...I plan to modify my Max V2.5 frame rather than buy a new V3 frame for my V3.2 upgrade.
format is MS-DOS (FAT32) i use a mac running Mojave OS 10.14 (18A391) formate root disk is APFS
Volumes can also be formatted as Mac OS Extended (the file system that comes with macOS 10.12 and earlier), MS-DOS (FAT), or ExFAT. the new hotness on the mac is
Apple File System (APFS)
Apple File System (APFS), the default file system for Mac computers with solid state drives, features strong encryption, space sharing, snapshots, fast directory sizing, and improved file system fundamentals. While APFS is optimized for the Flash/SSD storage used in recent Mac computers, it can also be used with older systems with traditional hard disk drives (HDD) and external, direct-attached storage. macOS 10.13 and later support APFS for both bootable and data volumes.

APFS allocates disk space within a container on demand. The disk’s free space is shared and can be allocated to any of the individual volumes as needed. If desired, you can specify reserve and quota sizes for each volume. Each volume uses only part of the overall container, so the available space is the total size of the container, minus the size of all volumes in the container.

Each volume within an APFS container can have its own APFS format—APFS, APFS (Encrypted), APFS (Case-sensitive), or APFS (Case-sensitive, Encrypted).
I think 16 g is a good size for swapping back and forth to the printer the 32 has smooch space i was tossing a lot of junk on it just because I had the space.

"Wider" rather than "deeper" might work best. I've not gone more than 3-4 nested directories deep yet. I've settled on trying to get all the important unique information for a file into the 1st 20 characters or so to deal with the truncation you mention. It is funny to still be dealing with DOS file naming conventions after all these years.

A faster card sure is a lot more pleasant to deal with! I was getting tired of waiting for copies to finish to a slow card when I finally decided to "waste" a Class 10 16GB card and was pleasantly surprised at how much faster it was.

noted I see your card is named flashair is that the Wifi SD card I recall reading about a few years ago? I thought the maker had problems with it and some of the versions worked and some didn't but at the time I recall not being sure you could order the right version....
