Printing stops and the MK3S+ resets...

I'm having a strange issue where randomly the current print will just stop.  There's no crash, it just stops.  After a minute or so the printer will reset as if I pushed the X button on the front panel.  Also, I'm using Octoprint and when this happens the connection gets lost and then re-established, but it takes another minute or so for the hot end temperature to read.  Interestingly, the bed temperature reads as soon as the connection is re-established.  Does this indicate a short in the hotend cables, or something else?

What do your fail stats say (LCD menu) ?

Mine has started doing the exact same thing.  I only get a few minutes into it then it just reboots.  No fail stats.  I downgraded the firmware and no luck.  I upgraded and and still no luck.  I'm kind of stuck now.  I can't print.

Cheerio,

On the last print is says 3 power failures and 3 filament runouts.

When this happens the extruder will simply stop in place and the power is on for at least 30s - 1min before it reboots.

It has no fail stats.  It reboots and it looks like there were no issues.  I did find something I'm testing.  I had been prompted to update the firmware so I plugged in the USB and updated it recently.  I just left it connected.  I decided to disconnect it because I was using the slicer for the next project and just thought about it.  After disconnecting it the print is getting further.  I'm letting it run to see how far it gets.  I was thinking the USB might be sending a keep alive to keep the port open and maybe causing a reset.  So far it seems to be working better.  Could be a coincidence but we will see.

Are you getting power outs/brownouts?

If not check the power cables and connectors.  Also check any equipment with large current demands that may be switching in and out on the same circuits.

That seemed to be the problem.  I can’t have it plugged in while printing and using the Slicer.  Once unplugged it seemed to print with no problems.

Cheerio,

After several successful prints the printer stopped again.  The fail stats show another power failure.  When this happens the extruder does move up and away from the print as it should with a power outage, but then the printer resets and does not give me the option to continue the print as I would expect with a typical power outage.

I have another printer and my desktop PC running on the same power circuit in the house.  These other items do not lose power when this happens. Also, it appears as though my RPi 4 does not lose power, and it is powered from the same power strip/surge protector as the problematic printer.

I think all of this would point to some sort of issue with the printer itself and not necessarily a brief power cut.  But I'm stumped as to what the problem could be.  I've checked all the connections and didn't find anything loose.  However I recently remembered that a few months ago when I was cleaning the nozzle with a brass brush (and forgot to turn the power off) I caused a spark on the hot end.  But that was months ago and this power cut problem only recently started.

As a test I could disconnect the black and white power panic cable and see if it happens again.  But that will be hard to test since this is a very random occurrence.

Any advice or suggestions welcome.

Try connecting to a different outlet with a different power cord.

A single outage is usually dealt with as advertised but rapid glitching or a second outage during the recovery process breaks the sequence.

Just to close out this thread, I replaced the hot end including the heating element/cable, which I suspected might have gotten damaged when I cleaned the hot end with a brass brush.  Since replacing the hot end/heater I have had no printer failures or power failures.
