New Purchase: Original Prusa i3 MK3S kit

Hi all,

I have just bought an Original Prusa i3 MK3S kit as a present for my boyfriend. He's an electrician by trade so I think he should be fine with the setup...

I was just looking for any advice on any additional bits and pieces I may need to get him to get going? We are both completely new to 3D printing, so any information would be appreciated.

Eagerly waiting delivery! Not sure i'll be able to keep it a secret until his birthday in December!!

Thanks for any advice,

Kirsty

Great idea! It should be lots of fun, hopefully for both of you. Just tell him it's a box of gummi bears when the big, black box shows up.

  • You'll definitely want a couple of spools of filament on hand. Start out with some pretty PLA. As he gets familiar with it, he can try other materials.
  • I definitely recommend having tools for disassembling the hotend and swapping nozzles. He very likely has these already. A 16mm open wrench/spanner and 7mm socket are highly recommended.
  • A spare nozzle (or three). When you need one, you need it bad. Having a few different sizes is fun for experimentation and learning.
  • Cleaning filament is very useful to have on hand.
  • 99% or the highest concentration you can get of isopropyl alcohol is good for cleaning the bed regularly.

I've got some more notes on the recommended tools and supplies here.

A suggestion here.  I recommend that you both carefully study the assembly manual, online version, before beginning, and read the comments that were posted for the various steps.

I also recommend that you do some minor clean-up on the plastic parts before assembly.  De-burr anything that's obvious and 'chase out' the holes with an appropriate size screw or drill bit.

Also, if anything does not seem to be going together properly, STOP and figure it out.  Don't just try to wing it.

Excellent list you have compiled on your website in your link. Thanks for sharing that. Going to start a dedicated toolbox to keep by the printer and that helps get things off to a good start.
