need for an extruder overload protection ?

Hi

I recently had to buy Verbatim filament since my prusament order was to slow to get here 🙂 I put in a long print overnight but that filament has some serious winding issues, and it creates a knot and locks up the spool. The print failed badly (my first print fail ever), but most worringly the extruder pulled so hard in the filament that it had lifted and displaced the whole printer (is sits in a encolusure with the spool on top). I was very surprised that there were no load protecion on the extruder. It could have ended in tears, but the printer seems to have survived and is still printing good prints. But leaving it unattended feals bad. Or have I just missed enabling something?

/Regards

I have been there a few times and yes it does make one feel bad but the printer is a 'tough old bird' and just keeps going along. Since you have since printed good prints, damage to the printer is unlikely.

Amazingly, the extruder motor can actually lift the whole printer off the table - yes I have seen it too!

I have found that if the filament winding is bad and starts to bind, it is best to unwind and rewind the spool and not keep going and hope for the best.

I was very surprised to say at least that the extruder motor had lifted the printer, i thought there were a risk of the smooth rods to get bent.

I had to cut a long part of the filament of the roll and throw it in the bin, it keeps getting me into trouble again and again, i just wish for this roll to end and the prusament to get here 🙂 But anyhow an overload protection should be a good idea to be sure it doesnt damage itself.
