Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

So which firmware will you guys be using after the upgrade? MK3 or MK3S?

The upgrade turns your printer into a MK3S so you'd use the MK3S firmware.

I "ordered" mine on 19/2 and it shipped on 21/2.

Mmm... I ordered my upgrade on the 15th (early morning) but no news on shipment yet... Are they doing their "creative" shipping queue management again?

Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

I ordered on the 13th as soon as the "add to cart" button was activated, and they keep telling me 3-4 weeks when i ask. I have no idea whatsoever how they are choosing when to ship? I think they keep a whitelist of people they "LIKE" and ship to them first, but for some reason, i have not made the whitelist?

I guess i am not important enough for them to care.

Are you in Europe (like me) or US (or elsewhere)? I think I remember that they have separate warehouses, maybe they have different stock/demand in the different regions.

I am in canada, which takes 2 days with DHL. I ordered a few weeks ago some extra PEI sheets and they came 2 days after shipment.
I have no idea why they are delaying my shipment, i guess VIP clients get theirs first. I just wish i knew what it was or cost to be VIP so i can get my upgrade sooner.

Glad the fan shroud is included - no need to print ABS (unless you want orange/red).... 🙄

I didn’t see where you said if you ordered self-printed parts or factory printed parts? I understood that the factory printed parts are running with a 4 wk lead time to ship?
The lead time is much shorter for self-printed parts.

Don't think thats the case.. I order 2 sets, both Factory printed on the 13th (Which I think is the day they were announced) and mine shipped yesterday (21st).

I am in the UK and was able to order first thing in the morning, before most of the US guys woke up and place theirs.. So I guess I was fairly high up the list.

Read through the upgrade instructions on Page 1 of this thread. It explains which firmware to use and when to install it.

Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

Completed the MK3 to MK3S upgrade without any complications. The parts printed fine, everything disassembled fine and the new parts went together simply enough.

Some things I noticed along the way:

1) They give you enough screws, nuts, etc. that you don't have to salvage anything from the old parts. Thanks! There are even spares for the filament sensor magnets and ball bearing.
2) The new part cooling fan is small and really close to the heater block. I'm assuming this is why they give supply a pre-printed one in ABS even with the self-print upgrade.
3) I know Prusa doesn't like the silicone sock but I like to use one. It still fits but with the new part cooling fan coming really close it might block some of the airflow. Further testing is needed and time will tell.
4) The new firmware update for the MK3S stopped the clicking of the power supply just as they say. The heatbed LED light used to rapidly flash corresponding with the clicks before. Now, it stays more constantly on and fades in/out as it heats.
5) The included 300g of PETG filament is way more than you need to print the parts. Slic3r says it only needed 90g and by weighing the spool before and after the print finished, it was only 4g off (94g to print).

Did my prints improve? I only printed a few things since the upgrade (mainly to check the calibration after the upgrade) but I couldn't tell the difference. The printer was printing very well before and is still printing well afterwards. I have only used the updated profiles Prusa provided so maybe with a little tweaking you could squeeze out a little improvement.

Overall, it was an easy, straight forward upgrade that I don't regret doing.

Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

teach me your ways and how you got your kit so fast.
actually, since there is a BOM, im ordering parts from digikey tonight, making my own board layout and wait for china to send it, and may get the sensor part built before prusa ship it. i already have EVERYHING to upgrade but that, including a LARGE bag of haribo. (ordered on 14th)
bad enough 3 different orders of parts and a reflow station got here days ago (one order from china), but im even waiting for amiga-kit to actually send off my order from them ordered 3 days before prusa order. c'mon europe, bang the rocks together.
PS. yes, i did order more than just the upgrade kit, because what person would pay 20USD for the kit, and 20USD+ for the shipping.. could that be the reason its tagged as backorder, but an extra PEI sheet and filament should be on hand i would think, thats just me. yes, im actually impatient and frustrated for once - see what happens when i miss one day of medication.

and we’ll be saying a big hello to all intelligent life forms everywhere … and to everyone else out there, the secret is to bang the rocks together, guys.

I ordered mine with in 15 minutes of it listed in the shop, was up at 4:15am my time, and was checking every 15 minutes 🙂
I think they said that they will do bulk shipping to other countries, as free shipping is cheaper for bulk shipping.

Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

Good afternoon:

Could someone give me the dimentions of the diameter of the steel ball carried by the new Mk3s extruder kit?

The adaptation kit costs US $ 20 and the shipping to my country costs US $ 90. Too much for a small improvement.

I'm evaluating doing the whole homemade kit.

Thank you very much!

Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

I was also wondering the diameter of the steel ball!

I priced out a self-sourced kit and it looks like it's bout $10 cheaper including shipping.

You can get 5 sensor PCB's from JLCPCB for $10 shipped... just use the kicad files from github.

But then I remembered that I'd like to get a MMU2 one day and it comes with all the upgraded parts anyway... so I think I'll just stick with my non 'S' MK3 for now.

Re: MK3S Upgrade Kit Unboxed

Well, if you don't mind waiting, you can get the upgrade kit (without the 300g of filament, just the components) from Aliexpress (and probably others) for as low as $7 or the sensor itself under $5, shipping included. Knowing Prusa, I suspect that the one from China will be delivered faster...

This is amazing! i cant believe i forgot about good old China! The whole kit identical is available for $7.25!! and i would have gotten it by now if i just ordered from China on the 13th! Anyways, i got my bondtech upgrade instead and it was delivered 2 days ago, i will install this weekend and post the results soon. But next time, I will stick with China as they actually ship when they say they will ship.

Dang you're right, actually get (2) pcs for $7.00 so will even have a spare. In any case I'm sticking with the old style sensor for a while.
