Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!
2) I could be wrong about this but It looks like a ball bearing will be rolling against the filament. Then the lever that passes through the IR sensor will be pushed against the ball bearing with magnets.
Yes, that's it. It's detection of the ball bearing. I don't think it's movement, just proximity. So anything passing through, no matter how mangled.. if it fits through the sensor assembly, it will trigger. At least in theory.
If an MMU2 filament change cycle starts, the bearing should fall away/untrigger the IR sensor during unloading, and retrigger it during loading. The printer will more or less know something is up, and what. Presumably if something is up, it will alert the user.
You should find that the MMU2S does not use balls and magnets 😉
From the blog:
with this mod, the filament sensor detects when the idler doors open a bit as the filament pushes Bondtechs apart.
The idler door has an arm extending upwards which interacts with the IR sensor placed above and to the right of the extruder body filament entry point.
Peter
I just found the MK3S upgrade instructions and it does use a ball bearing and magnets just as I thought: https://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/3.+E-axis+assembly/1060?lang=en . There is no direct interaction between the IR sensor and the idler door.

I updated my post to be more correct, but it does use balls and magnets. https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/general-discussion-announcements-and-releases-f53/mk3s-upgrade-kit-is-here--t27722-s30.html#p129631
Unless there is yet another additional sensor. I did also read the idler door bit, which you quoted... but that is contrary to the MK3s info, and their picture here.. (sorry it was posted on the last page, but I paste it here to show again) :
Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!
you know what PEter/PJR, I think you might be right, or both might be right.
The full quote:
"
You have to switch a few parts on the MK3S extruder (which is a part of the MMU2S upgrade). But with this mod, the filament sensor detects when the idler doors open a bit as the filament pushes Bondtechs apart. We have done an incredible amount of testing, as you can see in the photos below, and I’m sure that the reliability of the unit has increased significantly.
"
It says "you have to switch a few parts on the MK3S extruder".
So an MMU2S, is the same MMU2, with a modified non-standard MK3S extruder.
Who knows what those modifications are, maybe the gif I posted above is only representative of the MK3S extruder and is removed from the MK3S MMU2 modification. Maybe it isn't, and there are two sensors?
More detail is required I guess.

Well, I do know it's best not to question a beta-tester 😉
Sorry about the poor quality picture; currently printing, so it's moving about a bit.

beta-tester 😉
Peter
Thanks Peter that's great - so does it still have the new MK3S sensor as well? Can you take a photo from the side?

Here you go...
Please bare in mind that this is a pre-release version; things may have changed somewhat.
The IR sensor is horizontal at the top.

Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!
Thanks, so it seems to be a similar concept to the MK3S standard sensor. Except rather than magnets and balls actuating a printed arm in proximity to an IR sensor, it's the bondtech gears and the idler door springs doing the actuating of that extended arm - which presumably swivels in front of a similar IR sensor to the MK3S.

I think that's what I said before 🙂 :

The good thing is that you don't have to calibrate the MMU and the length of the "Bowden" is less significant. My "Bowden" is somewhat longer now.

Ooh, I wants that. I stand corrected, I thought the MK3S parts available to print were the same thing.

😀 😀 😀
Printed parts are here: https://github.com/prusa3d/Original-Prusa-i3/tree/MK3S/Printed-Parts/STL
But look for the ones labelled MMU2s.

Indeed. We'll have to wait.
Peter, is the rest of the extruder body the R4/MK3S... or is it a whole different body?
Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!
Peter, is the rest of the extruder body the R4/MK3S...
I believe it is. Again, I don't quite know as mine are pre-release.
It is shorter and has a shorted PTFE tube, and the extruder is apparently much easier to remove in situ (I haven't tried that yet though).

There's no alternative MMU2S "extruder body" in the STLs that you linked to.
They are all labelled "MK3S initial". https://github.com/prusa3d/Original-Prusa-i3/tree/MK3S/Printed-Parts/STL
Maybe hold off before printing anything, you MMU2S people.
Peter is still testing. Things may change.
🙂

Look for the ones with MMU2s in the filename.

Yes I know... but if people are still beta testing (Peter for example), things could possibly change, no? Have any MMU2S's actually shipped yet? If not, there's no reason why they couldn't change.

I agree, there is no sense in printing these parts out until they are finalized and we have the new hardware and sensors. But it's good to know this is coming out soon.
Re: MK3S Upgrade kit is HERE!!!!
FWIW, to the best of my knowledge, the files on GitHub are what is being released.
I would also make the point that I (like many other users) am always testing 😉

Peter, I don’t understand why this system is making the mmu2 more reliable. Aren’t stringy or to tall tips causing problems anymore?
It seems to me that the grinding problems should be less because the mmu2 unit doesn’t have to push into the bondtech gears to know where the filament is.
