How do you keep a silicone sock from falling of?

I got some silicone socks for my extruder but it does not seem to want to stay on once it starts moving. Any suggestions?

I zip-tie my, i have done that at assembly time. Due past experiences socks don't have a tight fit, so better to get them fixed.
Also the socks with the tiny hole, i think its the pro version can cause problems, plastic go under it... I have made a larger hole for that. So right now the no pro version is better to avoid problems

Or switch to the funnily named "garter screw" 🙂 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2740613

which sock?

https://e3d-online.com/v6-sock-3pack

The newer socks don't fully cover the nozzle and stay on perfectly. The old ones actually work better imo, but WILL fall off if not secured properly.

Did you use a regular zip tie?

till you get filament stuck under it and starts pushing it off.... probably why they changed the design.

Yes, that is what i recommend. I used the pro version once with MK2s, learned from that experience that filament can get under sock, so on mk3 assembly time i pre cut a hole with a x-knife to make it more like non-pro version, no more issues.
Note: I used the pro version only with the sock snap fit, maybe if used with a zipie and proper fix it the filament shall not go under it, still i don't want to risk and go safe. I leave printer unattended at 99% of the time and i don't like messy surprises. So far 0 problems.

Yes, the included zipies that come with printer or any that you have spare made of nylon.
Don't zip the hotend cables! And you don't need a extreme force at zip tie.
With this your sock will never move out of the place again.

I wrapped some kapton tape around the top of it. Its kind of a pain to put on but it keeps it on perfectly.

I use a piece of plain copper wire, twisting the ends together and tucking them out of the way. You can thread it around the heater and thermistor wires easily.

I use the one you linked and it eventually sags.

odd mines been fine for months now. few dabs of silicone rtv should stick in there pretty well. Did have to tweak my cables a bit so the clips seated right.

I used to just slather high temp silicone on my block with my mp mini when I had issues with the original socks.

I don't know why people have problems. I don't have any problems with the sock falling off. AND I use the pro version with the tiny hole that covers 99% of the nozzle even.

Re: How do you keep a silicone sock from falling of?

The old pro version (with the tiny hole for the nozzle tip only) will last for quite some time, but due to the heat the silicone arches a bit.
Regardless, it will say on there. Been using a pro silicone sock for about 5 months before i change it.

The old pro sock had three weaknesses though, one, filament could build up beneath the nozzle and the sock, and it will periodically barf burned chunks upon your print, and two, slightly curling overhangs will rip pieces of the covered nozzle off.
Three, if you get yours to fall off, then you didn't cool enough and this resulted in big upwards curls, that can completely strip the sock off.

The newer sock with the big hole for the nozzle has only problem no. three, big curling prints can rip it off.
But that is due to user error. Learn to avoid curling, and your sock will last many months.

A piece of cable tie wire (these twirly things around new cables) with the plastic removed wrapped around the top of the silicone sock will secure it furthermore. Don't use zip ties!

I use a metal paperclip. It holds the sock firm.

I use a bread-tie, after melting off the plastic- the tiny metal wire works fine for me

Hi everyone,

Thanks to Lemotan for the "Garter screw" trick. After I saw it I noticed that there was an ideally placed screw on the Mk3s carriage.

I just replaced the original m3x10 screw by an m3x18.

I started molding my own (printable mold on thingiverse) from high-temp RTV after being less than impressed with the longevity of the official E3d ones. They have a full top lip rather than the dinky "clips" and so stay put properly.

Hello,

I use the E3D silicone socket pro (tip of nozzle covered) and to keep it in place I take :

Copper electric cable, take two strands/wire approx diam. 0.2mm each), twist them (more strong like that) and put arround the top of the socket, 2mm under it. Twist again both ends to tight the wire.

There is a kind of internal lip and this trick help to keep it tight and don't fall off.

No pict for the moment to show you, sorry.

RE: How do you keep a silicone sock from falling of?

I use cheap chinese black knockoff socks (shaped like the pro version, but probably a bit less precise shape) and never had one fall off. I've got some filament underneath once, in the process of making a huge nylon-carbon blob, but even then, the sock saved the extruder. I don't fasten them in any way, but my heater and thermistor wires don't have much slack, so they keep the clips on the top of the sock engaged.

And yes, when i was doing experiments with steep overhangs, the curls were eating the socks really quickly.
