Food safe printing
Hello Everyone, I recently purchased the MK3 and love it! I'm taking on a project for a friend, designing cookie cutters, and have some questions about filaments and the hot end. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Food safe printing
There are several considerations to keep in mind. All FDM 3D printed objects are at least slightly porous, so bacterial contamination is a concern. But you can paint the object with polyurethane varnish to get a surface that is washable.
Cookie cutters are among the safest food-contact objects you can make, because they don't stay in contact with the food like a drinking cup or a dinner plate.
This article has a good overview; if you Google the subject you will find many other articles too. https://all3dp.com/1/food-safe-3d-printing-abs-pla-food-safe-filament/

Thanks Jay, appreciate it. I read that article and will be purchasing some of the Maker PLA food safe filament.
Coating with polyurethane makes me a little uncomfortable. Any tips on a brand to use?
Re: Food safe printing
cookie cutters in petG should be ok. stainless steel nozzle and extruder gears would be even safer. but for cookie cutters I wouldn't be too worried.
first I would worry about what plastics are touching food, then I would worry about if bacteria will grow. failsafe is print petG then throw them away.
I have a Prusa,therefore I research.
