Filament guidance - I want to print something breakable

Hi All

I became the proud owner of my second user MK3S+ last week... and am having so much fun.

The seller was very helpful, and gave me a few tips. He also mentioned how useful this forum was.

I have printed off a few useful things - and a few not so useful 😊

My question is this - I am in a drama group which needs to break a decanter on stage. I used transparent PLA to create a test shape with very thin sides (0.4 mm) - It printed well but was very flexible..

Are there settings which will cause the end result to be very brittle?

Is there another material which will be more successful.. I have only ever used PLA during my testing ?

The picture is 180mm high and in draft mode

Even if it  was printed in a brittle plastic; PLA *is* quite brittle, it wouldn't break in a convincing manner.  Better to go back to the standard theatrical sugar-'glass', you can use your printer to make suitable moulds but PLA softens at too low a temperature for hot-sugar pours.

Cheerio,

Thanks Diem

I looked at hot sugar as a solution... melting point 150 - 185...  A bit dangerous for someone ham fisted like me.

Well, maybe a stupid suggestion:
What about "pre-breaking" the vase. So design it. Cut it into pieces in your slicer. Print them.
Put it together with "not so good" glue. And test/see what happens if you let it fall.

We will do what we have always done. We will find hope in the impossible.

That... Is a very good idea - It also means I can make it 'chunkier'

Thanks so much !

Nice, that you can use this idea. Maybe it possible to use "breakable wax" as glue.
