Experience with i3 MK3S kit and US Customs?

I'm going to order an Original Prusa i3 MK3S kit.   I'd like both the smooth and textured sheets, but I see the warning about US customs duties.

Anyone have experience with this?  I have some questions:

  • Are the customs duties significant?
  • Does it delay transit through customs?
  • What if I place one order for the MK3S kit with smooth sheet, then a separate order for the textured sheet and some filament.   Will that make a difference, or is it best to just order everything together?

Thanks!

The customs limit for duty-free imports for personal use is $800. PR offers the kit at 750 and a discounted $49 shipping option for this exact reason.

Some folks have ordered assembled printers ($1000) and reported no duties/fees, others have had sales tax assessed (which you technically need to pay regardless). It really depends on the mood of the person clearing the paperwork.

If you want to be safe, order the kit and place a separate order for a sheet and a spool of filament or other spares/accessories. Shipping is flat $12 for up to 2kg, so may as well make the most of it. Spare thermistors and heaters recommended, spare extruder plastic parts (esp. fan shroud) not a bad idea if you don't have a second printer in case of blob-of-doom.

I received my assembled MK3S, a roll of filament and an extra build sheet which came to over $1200.00 with shipping at the beginning of March and to my surprise there was no duty. I'm not complaining.

I have ordered 3 Mk3S assembled and several kits and I have never paid import taxes.

Did not have to pay any duty on my order as well for assembled I3 MK3S. As other have said YMMV. I'd expect to pay duty + carrier processing fee on anything over $800 and celebrate if I end up not having to.

That really is the luck of the draw.  If they read label and see the value, you are paying a tariff.

Back when I ordered my kit, there was a notice on the Prusa site to order extra sheets, extra filament, etc. separately due to this.
