Change filament problem
I'm currently printing a design that uses virtually all of the print bed X/Y dimensions. I needed to change filament and invoked the Change Filament routine from the Tune menu. The print head proceeded to move to the front-right position and I immediately removed the remnants of the old filament and inserted the new filament. After the filament motor extruded an amount of new filament and I answered YES to the question, the print head moved back to its location and continued just as it should do.
The problem is that the print head was sitting directly over an extent of the print and melted a large hole in the location of the filament change. This could easily be averted if the filament change code raised the print head some distance above the print as it does when you Pause a print.
Maybe this could be an easy adjustment in the program for the next firmware release. I hope that this is the correct place to put a suggestion type comment. If not, let me know and I'll re-submit. Thanks
Re: Change filament problem
Hi Hal,
that's Odd,
when I do filament change, it does raise the extruder first.
were you by any chance near the Z maximum height at the time?
there may be a conflict between colour change and the available height

Re: Change filament problem
Hi Joan,
Thanks for the help. The filament change occurred at about 12mm above the print bed. So there wasn't any Z axis limitation in effect.
I'm running firmware 3.1.3-245. I just saw that there's a new firmware out which I'll install after this print is done - in about 14 hours. Also, I've got the filament sensor turned off since I'm running black PETG. Hopefully the new firmware will solve the false filament out alarms. Also, the Power sensor is turned off.
I use Simplify3d for slicing. Could this be a factor? How about Raspberry Pi Zero W or Octopi?
Thanks,
Hal
Re: Change filament problem
Hi Hal.
I am running 3.2.1 at the moment
I wouldnt expect raspberry pi to stop filament change raising the extruder
I also have the filament sensor turned off
But power fail is on

Re: Change filament problem
I updated the firmware to 3.2.0 and the problem has disappeared. All is well now.
