Cant pause a print and resume at same Z axis point

Occasionally during some larger prints I would like to press the pause print option on the control panel in order to then press the unload filament option to clean the print head. The print head will raise automatically to some predetermined z value. I will then clean the print head and reinsert the filament into the print head and then select resume print on the Octoprint interface and the print head will sometimes resume printing in midair without returning to the z axis position it was in when the pause print was activated. So then the print is ruined with no way to resume. Is there some way to accomplish this head cleaning midprint and successfully resume the print again?
