Blob of Doom Averted - Now life-long fan of silicone socks
I was originally leery of the E3D silicone socks after seeing some Blob of Doom results from filament catching inside the Pro-style sock (with the small opening) but finally gave the "non pro" version with the opening a try last year and was pleased with the lack of hotend cleaning required. After my 1st few socks started sagging, I tightened up the fit with a "retainer" of twisted wire and they've been holding well ever since. I had pretty much forgotten about them.
This evening, I got complacent (hey, it was GoT night!) and neglected to watch my 1st layer print. My heart sank when I returned to my printer and saw this:
You can see the retainer wire embedded in the blob, indicating the heater block was very much covered. I was very much relieved to check the nozzle and hotend and see this:
My shiny new PEI textured sheet seems to have survived the ordeal without damage:
Lesson learned: ALWAYS keep a silicone sock mounted and watch that 1st layer go down.

Yep, I also subscribe to using those wonderful little blue things, they have saved my bacon numerous times. It gives the impending blob of death nowhere to stick its little claws onto, hoorah for the silicone sock.
Off topic slightly, I must say that the pc sheet you have there looks amazing. I can't wait until they're available on the eshop. 😛

I was a Jan 2018 order and got my sheet about a month ago to coincide with my 1 year anniversary since the printer arrived. I haven't seen any recent updates, but it seemed they were making strong progress towards fulfilling all the original orders. I've started checking the e-shop regularly just in case. The double-sided smooth PEI-stickered sheets showed up without notice one fine day.

My printer was saved by the sock recently, too. The blob was made of carbon-filled nylon. Hard, tough, temperature resistant, not soluble in anything reasonable. Socks rule!
