ASA and Stress
I bought some ASA filament and had good success right away using the Prusa settings for ASA. However, when I tried to print something large, it cracked after cooling. And I don't mean just a little fracture, I mean "BANG!", loudly, and it split in half.
I tried again with modified settings. 265/120 for nozzle and bed, fans off and a 100% height shield. That worked - no splitting. But the shield looks very ripply and stressed, so I'm pretty sure that my job is also suffering a little bit, even though it's holding together OK. Ideas?
RE: ASA and Stress
Hello doug-b5,
ASA like ABS is prone to warping if the hot plastic layers cool unevenly for any reason.
Both plastics should print better inside an enclosure as that will stop the print from being cooled unevenly by any air drafts, etc. .
You may also want to PID tune both the HeatBed and the Hotend at the required operating temperatures to minimize temperature variations during the print.
Slowly cooling the enclosure with the finished print inside will allow the entire print to slowly relax and relieve any uneven forces between the print layers, fill, and perimeters and stop warping and cracking. That is how they "aneal" both molded and blown glass items after they are made.
