For someone that had the mk2 before the mk3 and seeing the print quality from an mk3 in person, it's a bad joke. Vomit quality.

Its clearly over-extrusion, have you tried adjusting the flow or extrusion multiplier at all? Does your base layer look all wavy too?

My MK3 produces neat linear sides on all my prints

It's hard to get good pictures of the layers as to the naked eye you can't really see them, but here's an example of the Vase file I printed unmodified from the SD card, and a paint brush holder. Both with Inland PLA from microcenter, I usually print with the flow at 80-85 to avoid over-extrusion, but other than that I don't really mess with the settings. All at 100% speed. Any moire pattern you might see on the blue print is because the forum is re-sizing the image. Open it in a new tab to see the full one.

thing is, on the mk2/s i don't have to really touch flow, speed or any defaults and it prints consistent everytime... and it seems to print well for 99% of it's owners which is why the reputation for this machine just spiked through the roof. you'll barely find a thing on mk1.... with the MK3 from what i see there are definitely problems even with the assembly being simpler. it's almost like a 50/50 good / bad experience. the good could be better than the bad but the bad seems to be much higher than the mk2 was.

This forum isn't the only one, some people have this as their first machine as not every pre-existing mk2 owner is going to jump to the next model. People go to support/chat before they come here if at all so the issues here are less than what there really is as well. Besides basic temp settings, the out of the box settings usually work bang on for common filament and they all come out perfectly fine. you can certainly tune things and you could have adhesion issues but these aren't what's being discussed. also given the responses here, it's certainly a mix.... small sample size sure but enough to know. the success is probably higher than 50% of course, maybe it's 80 or 90 but it's still less than mk2.... otherwise this thread wouldn't exist.

Would you mind retaking them without flash and with overhead room lighting like I did please. The flash hides the imperfections a lot as you can see here:

Thanks sean. Would you mind taking it again please at an angle and with overhead lighting like I did that showed the layer lines best (or rather at their worst visually). I also noticed, you have some strange banding lines occurring in your print that are not like my own.

I printed that at 225c, and fast. I'll take another pic of the part late tonight when I get in. I can't print more for a while, rebuilding my extruder.

I have a rather complex hardware upgrade. Check the thread by JLTX.

I haven't touched my slicer settings since the upgrade. I also run weekly 3.2 builds that I compile.

Ah. Ok. So you're not running a stock mk3. That changes things a lot, especially if say the mod is a complete revamp of the extruder. Is this what it looks like on yours?

Mostly. I have different colors, different wiring concept, a hand sculpted cooler, and the full size mk3... But yeah. It's the same. Lol

Yup - this is with 10 buck a roll pla
had a few problems getting z cal right - but she is running just fine now

That looks really good. Did you have the same inconsistent extrusion problems that others have had? If so, what did you do to combat it?
