All of sudden now getting Mintemp bed error and printer stops. New MK3S printer barely a month old

Why is my new $1000 printer now suddenly saying mintemp bed error .First it was a bit intermittent with that message starting 2 weeks ago,  Now as soon as it heats up and starts to print it stops and displays this error. A few times it did mintemp fixed error please restart, but now its just mintemp bed error. I don't want to hear how its the room temperature as that's crap! I have a Wanhao D6 that is unaffected by room temp . If a $1000 printer can't print in 60 degree room temp(no its unheated downstairs so I can't increase the temp) but a chinese $400 printer can, then I want my money back

Rather than complain to other users who can't really fix it for you or refund your money; why not complain directly to Prusa?

Using the store CHAT offers the fastest response.

I can't find this store chat, where is that located? I did send them a message via their contact page on Saturday but no response yet. It seems I have a loose cable. I managed to get one 5 hour print done, but when I tried another it failed with stupid mintemp bed alarm with about 20 minutes left.  I moved the  heated bed cable around and saw the temp fluctuate and go to 0.

I don't know how the cable went bad after only a month.

Either that or it does that when you move it around. If its firmware issue with the 16 degree temperature setting, why can't we change that in the firmware and reupload it? Lower it to 14 or so.

You have to login in order to see the chat.

Looks to me like you have a broken cable or loose connector. Either replace it or find the spot.

Firmware is open source. Feel free to change it at your will https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware

As I understand it, the two MinTemp detentions are a safety feature to runaway heating. The assumption is that any reading below 16C is a defective thermistor. Although I do wonder if this determination could not be a little more sophisticated, ie track thermistor reading with heating time but I'm sure there's a good reason why that wouldn't be safe.

So it's not that your more expensive printer can't print below 16C, it that is won't burst into flames if a thermistor dies. I'm sure the more knowledgeable will correct if this is wrong.

sorry for long delay for reply. Had relapse of viral bronchitis. Been sick with this crap since week before Thanksgiving.

Am logged in, I just didn't see alink to it anywhere that said click here to go to chat. Finally found it in Eshop after scrolling all the way down. and no adware installed either.

I did finally get a reply in email that it was a bad cable which I responded to and then after 2 days nothing. In Chat I  talked with Guillermo(?) ,I think, and am now getting new bed thermistor cable sent.

I do see your point your  about the temperature if its below 16 degree, its assumed defective or broken and printer may go all Michael Bay on you. though it still seems to me that's too high of a minimum. Its still 60 degreess F and isn't cold

if the thermistor cable goes open circuit, the sensed temperature becomes invalid and shows below 15 centigrade. so the room may be warm enough, but the sensed temperature may be too low!

the printer protects you, by refusing to heat!

you can get mintemp on the bed, or the extruder!

"the printer protects you, by refusing to heat!"

I do see the point but perhaps it could be a little more sophisticated ie start to heating for some limited period and if change detected continue to heat.

@towlerg

the firmware is available for you to fiddle with...   if you need to operate at temperatures 15C and below

Měl jsem problém. Při tisku se tiskárna zastavila a žádala výměnu filem. Přitom na cívce bylo dost. Závada byla v tom, že tloušťka filem. v určitém úseku byla cca 1 milimetr.

@joantabb

Unfortunately I'm a potential Mini owner, so that option is problematic (snap off tab voiding warranty).

While not ideal, one kluge would be to build an insulated box out of foam insulation board and tape with some sort of heat source (incandescent light bulb if they still exist in your part of the world). Use a thermometer (an inexpensive indoor/outdoor thermometer?) that you can have the sensor inside the box, but still read the display. That way if it is a particularly cold day that you want to print, cover the printer with the box, turn on the light and watch the temperature inside the box. Once the thermometer reads above 15°C (maybe 20°C for safety margin), turn off the light and store the insulated box away. Then you should be able to turn the printer on and start using it.

@towlerg

You're (potentially) loosing a warranty even on MK2/MK3 if you're using modified firmware. Either adjust your environment or adjust the firmware/loose warranty. Not sure how else we can help you with that issue.

I do intend to build a heated enclosure (probably one of the Ikea cabnets with a glass door). I thought it worth while to add a thermostat, got one for chips on eBay both heating and cooling. Don't know yet if I need active cooling but if I can avoid better cause I can't think of way to make it work that won't cause drafts.

@joantabb

Greetings Joan,

I am receiving a Mintemp Bed Err.  The printer then stops printing.  It was working fine up until a few days ago.  I am not sure what to do.  I have a MK3.  Please advise as to steps forward to troubleshoot and repair printer.

Cheers,

Felix
