3D modeling software question ?
❓ After an amazing start with this printer. I am finally looking at building something I have been working on for 30 years. My issue is I want a standalone 3d modeling program that is good for to import into a slicer that will not break the bank.... figured i would check out all that people say... But, because of patents, it must be standalone and not cloud based... for copy write purposes...
Thank you for all the help/suggestions.

I typed up a response, and when I tried to submit it it had been deleted. 🙁
Anyway.
Fusion 360, I think is the golden standard for "Free"
It's "free" for the hobbyist.

Re: 3D modeling software question ?
Unfortunately for the OP, Fusion 360 is cloud based. You can work in 'offline' mode for up to 2 weeks, but then it will force you to upload any changes locally to the cloud.
Re: 3D modeling software question ?
And unless you are prepared to put hours of "training" in F360 can be a nightmare.

Re: 3D modeling software question ?
I don't get why it can't be cloud based.
You do not share your designs and you still own it. I can't see copyright or patents be a hindrance unless you are doing something illegal.
With fusion you can even make up to $100 000 a year and still use it for free!
Re: 3D modeling software question ?
I like 3dbuilder for win 10. It was a good starting point.
Re: 3D modeling software question ?
I use Sketchup.. Its perfect for my needs..
Loads of support (via Youtube and forums) and I find it easy to use.
The only thing to be aware of is that since Sketchup 2018 the "free" version is now browser based.. But you can still download 2017 from their website which is a standalone app.

FreeCad.

Re: 3D modeling software question ?
There are many good programs. I would suggest FreeCad as well if you want something oriented towards engineers or Blender if you want something oriented towards artistic types. Both have a learning curve if you haven't used similar programs before. If starting from zero and simply need to make a simple 3D, Solvespace is quite easy to learn and can serve as a bridge to FreeCad. If you want something extremely simple and easy to use to test out a general shape, I would suggest Tinkercad but it is not a stand alone program.
Re: 3D modeling software question ?
Freecad recently had a significant update, might be worth a look. Even has FEM.
Alibre announced an educational version.
Sculptural modeling: Blender, Sculptris, ZBrushCore, ZBrush.

I don't either. The only event I can think of that it could not be cloud based is if it is a government contract. But if it's a government contract, why are you worried about money?
Why would autodesk sell a multi-thousand dollar program, and tell the people who buy it. "haha, If you use our software, we own your creations too! You pay us dearly for the software, and then we "take" millions of dollars of designs, and sue you to make even more!! Isn't that right Mr. Bigglesworth."
Has anyone ever noticed there's a trend of people who have "had a design idea for 20+ years, need a cheap/free, offline, and safe design program."
I think this is the 3rd time I've seen this in the last 4-5 months on here.
